The city, which arose more than two and a half thousand years ago on the shores of the Adriatic Sea, has preserved to this day the medieval charm of narrow streets, the majestic architecture of ancient churches and a powerful fortress wall encircling its center. Old Budva is completely built up with snow-white old houses with red tiled roofs.

A stone mausoleum with a golden roof and two statues of Montenegrins appeared on Mount Lovcen in the 60-70s of the XX century. It was built on the site of a chapel contrary to the will of its "owner" - the last spiritual ruler of the country, Peter II Petrovich-Negosh. With located behind the mausoleum observation deck offers a magnificent view of Montenegro.

A tiny island, built in the 15th century on top of a reef, on which the miraculous icon of the Mother of God was found, has a telling name - “Our Lady on the Rock”. A Byzantine-style church dedicated to the Queen of Heaven appeared on Gospa od Shkrpela two centuries later. Today, it houses several dozen paintings and two and a half thousand precious "votive" records.

Located in the Bay of Kotor, opposite the town of Perast, a private miniature island was once completely given over to a Benedictine abbey founded back in the 9th century. After the earthquake of the 17th century, it was decided not to restore the ancient monastery. Instead, one church was built, within the walls of which paintings by the famous Kotor artist - L.M. Dobrichevich.

11. Crno Jezero (Black Lake)

The glacial Black Lake, located on Mount Dumitor, consists of two small reservoirs - Big and Small, connected by a narrow strait. The shores of Crno Jezero are covered with dense coniferous forests, the emerald reflection of which gives the water a unique dark shade. A walking path winds along the lake.

The Mediterranean fjord, reaching a length of twenty-eight kilometers, has long served as a refuge for ships waiting out the storm. Today, on its banks there are ancient cities and villages, decorated with medieval Orthodox and Catholic churches, towers, fortresses - Kotor, Perast, Risan and others.

The medieval defensive fortification of Budva is an architectural complex of the ruins of the Church of St. Mary, the square, the gate, the buildings of the former barracks and the fortress walls. The deepest European canyon is located between the mountains Durmitor and Sinyaevina and Zlatni Bor and Lyubishnia. Built in the first half of the 20th century, the arched concrete bridge across the Tara River was considered the highest bridge in Europe at the time of completion. Consisting of five arches and having a length of three hundred and sixty-five meters, it goes along a deep canyon, overgrown with lush green vegetation. In the area of the bridge there is a campsite with a car park, a shop and a hostel.

16. Kotor - old town

The historical center of Kotor is easy to distinguish from the modern part of the city - it is securely hidden behind the medieval fortress walls. The picturesque narrow streets of the Old Town are made up of buildings built in the Romanesque and Byzantine styles. Religious sights are represented by the Cathedral of St. Tryphon and churches - St. Luke, St. Anna, St. Mary.

I have the TOP of the most beautiful and unusual places in Montenegro varies from year to year. I am immersed more and more in the country and fall in love like a first-grader girl. And these are not popular sights of Montenegro, on the contrary, they should have silence, picturesque pictures, authenticity in architecture, local residents unspoiled by mass tourism. In the summer, I advise everyone to escape for a couple of days from the noisy coast to the mountains, explore the trails, old settlements, mountain lakes ...

You can list the wild beauties of Montenegro for a long time ... but I will tell you about the most beautiful places for me personally, here my soul rests, and my eyes rejoice at the beauty 🏝🏡🌄🌅

1. Komovi Mountains

These mountains are hidden from the bustle of the city and tourists, Komovi does not sell any travel agency on the embankment of Budva or Herceg Novi, and that's great! And the mountains are a special world where you are finally left alone, you begin to hear yourself and hidden desires, calm nervous system, let go of the problems accumulated during the working week. And only then you begin to notice the beauty around, and nature fills you with positive energy.

in Montenegro they became a discovery for me last year, and if I have a couple of days off again, I will not hesitate to go to these 3 peaks, which are not inferior in beauty to the mountains of Durmitor or Prokletije. Total 170 km from Budva, and you feel the aroma of mountain herbs, hear the whistling of the wind, the murmur of streams, the singing of birds ... Near the mountain pass Treshnevik you will meet several places where you can rent a house or put up a tent nearby, I advise (their phone. +38267380532) or on the mountain pass, and if you are with a jeep, then stop at the very foot of the mountains in Katun Martinovica

2. Prokletiye mountains and Grebae valley

Another wild place in Montenegro, where civilization has recently reached. The Prokletiye mountains were proclaimed a national park only in 2009, because of this they did not receive promotion, funds, or popularity among the mass tourist. The place still remains semi-wild, interesting for lovers of trekking, nature, and relaxation. Among the overhanging formidable cliffs of Prokletiye there are several valleys where sheep and cows graze, simple eco-katuns and restaurants were immediately erected. For example, on Booking you will find beautiful bungalows for 4 people, ask for a wood-burning stove

From Montenegro, I advise you to go to the Grebae valley through Albania ( on the map), the new transit road will captivate you with a beautiful canyon, picturesque serpentines, the mountain river Cievna and hospitable Albanians, be sure to take a break in Tamare village for a cup of coffee/beer. For Russians and Belarusians from April 1 to October 31, 2019, for Ukrainians and Kazakhs - all year round. And in the photo below - the peak of the Volushnitsa peak, where we went trekking last August ()

3. Poselani village on Skadar Lake

In past centuries, a village in the bays of Lake Skadar Poseljani was a rich place, nature rewarded it with a powerful waterfall, which helped to grind wheat and corn into flour for a huge region! The millstones of 14 mills were spinning here, because of which Montenegrins from all over the area arrived on donkeys or boats on the lake. A century ago, kafans, shops and even a kind of casino worked here. Now there is none of that. The earthquake of 1979 also changed the waterfall, and the Montenegrins no longer needed to live that primitive life with the factories built in Podgorica and tourism in Budva.

Again, tourism did not affect settlers because of an unimportant road ... The bus will not pass, only a passenger car. locals, of which only a few remained, built at their own expense an asphalt road from the highway to the village, but closed it to the barrier. At the same time, they are waiting for tourists 🙂 The vicious circle can be broken by leaving the car on the upper track near the cypresses and going down on foot for 15 minutes to the waterfall. I advise you to take a swimsuit and refresh yourself in cold water in the hot summer.

I love the villagers for a real picture of the Montenegrin village, you can close your eyes and imagine donkeys on this bridge with sacks of flour. Or women at the waterfall doing laundry. But alas, everything has sunk into the past

4. Mountain pass Sedlo in Durmitor National Park

50 km connects the regional cities, but you will drive 1.5 - 2 hours due to winding serpentines, sheep and cows blocking your path. This road passes among the most high peaks Durmitor National Park, and will leave an indelible impression in your memory!

On a winding road it is impossible to pass a huge bus, so the usual excursion "Canyons" does not include trips ...

  • (not a convertible), if you are confident in your abilities, it is better to spend the night in Zabljak to enjoy the mountains -.
  • Buy the Grand Canyons tour, they take you in a minibus
  • I can recommend a good driver-guide who takes the Big Circle around Durmitor and the River Canyons, the cost of such an excursion is 200-250 euros, depending on the season, seats in the car.

5. Panorama of Sveti Stefan and Crvena Glavica beach

You can admire the island hotel from different points, but I like it - less known and hard to reach - at Saint Sava Church. There is an asphalt road, but in serpentines and gullies. They like to do wedding ceremonies or romantic photo shoots here. But we come for the sake of silence, contemplation on the red roofs of the Budva Riviera and islands in the sea. I especially like it in spring, late autumn with a bottle of wine and get high with a view of the live photo wallpaper. Details about this panoramic point -

And one of the favorite places in the Budva Riviera is located below this panorama - the bay with the beach of Crvena Glavica 🏜 It is often called Plaza Galija at a summer restaurant. The place is amazing in its beauty - red rocks, emerald sea, and in the evenings - marvelous sunsets! And also next to, but in the distance, even in summer with cafes and beach equipment there are few vacationers 💦

This one is one of my favorites. At the end of May, we were alone here, not counting the builders ... The pebbles are medium in size on the Galia beach, but I still like to climb the rocks on the right and just admire the sea

6. Piva Lake Canyon

Lake Piva is one of the most beautiful places in Montenegro. Recommended to visit in the morning or afternoon sunny weather, then it will look like a blue mirror surface. This artificial lake of several branches appeared on the site of the flooded Piva River during Yugoslavia, when a dam was built. You can drive along its canyon if you are going to Scepan Polje for rafting on Tara, or by connecting with a visit to the national one. You can come to town Pluzhine, rent kayaks or a motorboat, just swim on the beach, dine with delicious homemade cuisine in Ethno-village "Izlazak", you can also stay with them overnight - on.

In autumn or after rain, the canyon of Lake Piva takes on a mystical appearance.

7. Bukumir Lake in the Kuchki Mountains

There are many mountain lakes of glacial origin in Montenegro, and they are much more interesting and sparsely populated than the accessible and touristic Skadar or Black Lake. In April, I am waiting for the snow to melt on the road and go to a fairy tale - to Bukumir lake in the Kuchki mountains. In summer, the picture will not be so picturesque, although trekking will be available due to a more pleasant climate, the routes in the mountains are marked. More about Bukumir Lake and the road to it.

8. Gorlo Gorlo Sokolovo

13. Canyon of the Mrtvitsa River

If you love wildlife and hiking, then go to. Here you can arrange a small hike, without elevation changes, suitable even for children, the walk time is from 1.5 to 5 hours round trip, depending on where ... You will see old bridges, a raging mountain river, a jungle of trees and moss! You can grab a bathing suit to freshen up!

And another recommendation of what to see nearby - on the way to stop to take a picture at suspension bridge if you are with children, visit the petting zoo in Brezna, and believers will be interested in the Moraca Monastery. The list of my favorite non-touristic and most beautiful places in Montenegro does not end there, explore the country not along the highways, turn off more often and walk along the marked trails!

Video - non-tourist Montenegro

It was hit by Bukumir Lake in Kuchkikh Gora and a hike to the Gorlo Sokolovo gorge

Mausoleum of Negosh on the top of Mount Lovcen

This is the name of the tomb in which the spiritual ruler of the described state is buried. Its construction was carried out in the period of 60-70 years. The history of this attraction of Montenegro is quite interesting, but I want to say more about what it is today. This is a low-rise building made of natural stone, which has a gate, which is "guarded" by statues in the form of two chernogoroks. In the interior there is a statue of Peter II, it weighs 28 tons, the sarcophagus of the ruler is on the lower floor. The rating of this attraction is quite high, many people visit it. Facade of the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon

Where to go in Montenegro? Alternatively, you can visit the cathedral, named after the Christian martyr. Local residents of the city of Kotor consider him their patron, moreover, they keep his relics, considering them saints. The description of the attraction says that they were brought from the city of Constantinople. As for the interior design of the shrine, there is a mixture of styles. Attention should be paid to the carved canopy, which flaunts over the place where gifts are stored. It is a three-tier structure supported by marble columns.

14. Tara River Canyon

Panorama of the Tara river canyon

The reservoir is one of the longest in the country, along it there is a gorge 1300 m deep, 80 km long. The rating of this attraction is quite high, due to its surrounding beauties. Mountains rise on both sides, making the canyon part of Durmitor Park. River water is well oxygenated, so it changes color from emerald to frothy white. The flora and fauna in the valley is rated as diverse, the average temperature never rises above 11 degrees Celsius.

15. Dzhurdzhevich Bridge

Dzhurdzhevich Bridge across the Tara River

It was built at the beginning of the 20th century from concrete. It is interesting to know that it is not named after its creator, but in accordance with the name of the owner of the farm, which is located nearby. At the entrance of the bridge there is a monument dedicated to one engineer who took an active part in the construction process. The bridge itself has 5 arches, and its height is 170 m. Walking along it, you can admire the Tara River and picturesque views. The best time to visit here is from June to September.

Such establishments are located in old buildings, which adds to their atmosphere.

Mountain and Lovcen National Park

Going further, what to see in Montenegro, namely in Kotor? There, in the rocky region of the Alps, there is a park of national importance, this status was awarded to it in 1952. The advantages of the described zone include a variety of flora and fauna. A positive point is also the harmonious combination of the two climatic zones. On the territory of the park there is a mountain lake, a village, a mausoleum, a building for worship. You can get to the sights by car, it is strictly forbidden to put up tents here. If you want to stay overnight, then it will not be superfluous to familiarize yourself with the list of hotels in Montenegro. Buildings on the territory of the Orthodox monastery Moraca

It is located above a deep canyon, namely, a few km from the city of Kaloshin. We are talking about a complex that includes 2 temples, one large, the other a little more modest. A 15-minute drive from Budva is Sveti Stefan, an icon of Montenegrin tourism. This rich and famous small island was once a fishing village, and the old town on this island has not changed much. Today you will see narrow streets, small churches and family shops here. The population of Sveti Stefan largely decreased in the 20th century, and in 1954 there were only 20 inhabitants registered on the entire island. But in the 1960s, a group of visionaries turned the city into one of the most attractive and luxurious places in the entire Mediterranean. To visit the island, you need to book a room in an expensive hotel, but the beaches near Sveti Stefan are open to everyone throughout the year. From these beaches you can admire the island from the side.

Budva is famous for its nightclubs and sandy beaches located on the Adriatic Sea. If you are looking for a place to relax and party, then Budva should be considered first. The former capital of Montenegro is now one of the most interesting areas of the country. Cetinje is located behind a mountain range, which is located directly behind Kotor and Perast. On the main square of Cetinje, you will find the former house of King Nikola, which has been converted into a museum. In fact, there are many other museums within walking distance of the square. But still, the main attraction here is the monastery of Cetinje, originally built in the 15th century. Although it has been destroyed many times over the centuries, it has been repeatedly restored. The building you can see today was built in the 18th century. Here you can see a fragment of the True Cross and the mummified right hand of John the Baptist.

9. Lovcen National Park and Negosh Mausoleum

The sights of Montenegro are very diverse, and in one place you can simultaneously see famous mausoleum and admire the fantastic view of the Lovcen National Park. Despite the fact that the mausoleum of Negosh is one of the main attractions of Montenegro, many tourists go to it mainly to look at this country from high altitude.
On Mount Jezerski Verkh, the second highest mountain in the national park, the grave contains the remains of the greatest hero of Montenegro, Peter II Petrov Njegos. The mausoleum itself was built into the mountain and covered with marble. To get to the mausoleum, you have to climb about 500 steps, but it's worth it. On a clear day, from the top of the mountain, you can see almost the entire country.

10. Ostrog Monastery

What to see in Montenegro in the first place, if you are interested in cultural or religious attractions? In my opinion, the Ostrog Monastery, located 900 meters above the Zetskaya Valley, will be the best place for you. This is the most important religious site in Montenegro for Orthodox Christians. About a million visitors come here every year to see this unique building. During the hot summer months, pilgrims are given free mats to sleep in front of the monastery. This impressive monastery is often referred to as the "miracle of Saint Basil" because no one knows exactly how it was built. Sometimes it seems that the Ostrov Monastery just grew out of the rock.

11. Hajj Nehai

Built in the 15th century by the Venetians who were trying to defend the country from the Ottoman Empire, Halj-Nehaj is one of the most majestic fortresses in Montenegro. To get to it, you have to walk up a steep slope through a pine forest. The stone path will lead you to the gate behind which the fortress rises. This is another attraction that will make you wonder how it was built. Near the fortress is the Church of St. Demetrius (13th century). Its construction preceded the construction of the fortress, and once there were separate Orthodox and Catholic altars.

12. Piva River Canyon

Part of the fun of visiting Piva River Canyon is the path to it. To reach the canyon, you must drive through beautiful mountain roads and cross 56 tunnels carved into the mountains after World War II. But once you're done, you'll be rewarded with a great view of Piva Lake and a beautiful canyon. You can also visit the Piva Monastery, which was moved to a higher level within 11 years after the construction of the hydroelectric power plant in Pluzine. Piva River Canyon is an ideal place for rafting and camping.

13. Old Town Bar

During the Roman Empire, Old Bar was the economic and political center for the region's Byzantines. Now the area is mostly ruins, although there are some well-preserved structures. In the Old Bar there is a small museum with exhibits dating back to 800 BC. This museum will also tell you about the history of the city, including the Turkish attack on Bar in the 19th century and the efforts to reclaim the city. In Stary Bar you can visit the Church of St. Nicholas with its Serbo-Byzantine frescoes, the 11th century fortress and the Cathedral of St. George, the city's patron saint. If you are interested in Ottoman architecture, then visit the Turkish bath, the clock tower and the 17th century aqueduct that helped bring water from a spring located 3 km from the city.

14. Tara River and Canyon

The second largest canyon in the world after the Colorado River canyon is also known as the "Tear of Europe". The unbridled natural beauty of the Tara River Canyon was forged as the river cut its way through the mountains. Here you will see river paths, breathtaking gorges, waterfalls and even calm stretches of the river. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Tara Canyon reaches a depth of 1300 meters. For comparison, the Grand Canyon in the United States is approximately 1,500 meters deep. One of the most popular activities in Montenegro is rafting on the Tara River. For those who prefer ground activity, I recommend hiking in the city of Kurevac, which is located at an altitude of 1625 meters.

15. Biogradska Gora National Park

Located between the Tara and Lim rivers, the Biogradska Gora National Park consists mainly of old forests, clear lakes and beautiful pastures. But there is something really incredible in the very center of the park. First - the virgin forest.
