From October 1, 2012 we have put into operation the newest unique service on the Internet - displaying a list of addresses on the map.

This is the only convenient service known to us that allows you to easily show a large list of addresses (for example, from an EXCEL file) on a map and find out the geographical coordinates of all points.

Using this service is extremely simple.

You need to create a file with addresses as follows:

Address- address in a row in an arbitrary form, for example - St. Petersburg, Nevsky pr. 155 building 3, or Nevsky 155/3

The address must be recorded in the first column and in ONE column as a whole. If you have an address in several columns, you just need to merge them into one.

Point name (point name)– if it does not exist, then the system puts the serial number of the point.

Description– any text is a description of the point, it is transferred to the description of the point on the map.

The whole strength, power and advantage of the new service is that there can be a lot of such addresses. The system processes all addresses and shows you the process of linking the addresses to the map.

It is quite obvious that objectively the system will not always be able to link addresses to the map. Sometimes it is not possible to bind addresses.

For example, Parkovaya Street is found in different districts of St. Petersburg - in Pushkin, Pavlovsk and other areas. Therefore, it is impossible to link and show Parkovaya Street on the map of St. Petersburg until the area is indicated. The program allows you to specify areas and even specify the spelling of the address in the process of linking addresses.

And of course, the program will not be able to correctly bind the address if it is specified incorrectly, for example, “from the stall to the left around the corner.”

And the program displays the results of the binding in the form of statistics.

The program also produces the resulting EXCEL file, where it adds two columns with coordinates (latitude and longitude).

In addition, address binding codes are displayed in an additional column.

These address binding codes are a very important indicator. With these codes, you can select only those addresses that are most correctly linked from your point of view.

For example, if the program did not find a specific building, then it will look for a house with the same number, but without a building. And if she finds such a house number, then she will issue the corresponding binding code.

Conclusions.

This mechanism for displaying a list of addresses on the map allows large arrays (lists) of addresses (for example, from an EXCEL file) to be placed and displayed on the map, while displaying all the coordinates of the anchored points in the result.

Next, a window will open for uploading and attaching content to the marker. It can be a photo uploaded somewhere on the Internet, or a video from Youtube. The image can also be found with a Google image search. You cannot directly upload a photo from your computer to Google Maps.

How to mark coordinates on the map?

If you know the coordinates of a certain area, then in the Google Maps search bar, enter the latitude and longitude separated by a space. It is important in this order! The separator between degrees and decimal minutes is a dot.

I saw the use of layers in separating places and routes according to their purpose. For example, on one layer I put markers of places where I have already been, and on the second layer I mark those countries and cities that I want to visit in the future. And all the labels set for each layer will be simultaneously displayed on one map.

It will be possible to layer layers on top of each other and already edit each one separately. “Edit” is a strong word, because in fact we can not do so much, namely: change the style of the layer, edit the data table, disable and enable its display.

In the example map I am making for this article, I set the color of the markers (labels) to be different so that there is a visual difference. In addition to markers in the menu, you can edit the display style, as well as for routes with lines.

Importing visited places from Excel to Google Maps

If you have many places that you want to mark on the map, then you can prepare an Excel table, which you can then import into the map. Very convenient and saves time.

The base table will consist of three columns:

• The location of the marker. It can be either exact coordinates (latitude and longitude), or just the name of the area. I use the name of the city in which I was and indicate the country separated by commas. The country must be specified because some city names are repeated and the program can place a lot of unnecessary markers. Also try to write names without errors;
• The second column is the name of the marker, which will be displayed in the header and in the menu;
• The third column will be responsible for the description, in which you can specify any information related to this area.

In any form, you can specify more columns, these can be phone numbers, websites, hotel names, and anything else. All information from additional columns will be in the description of the mark.

Now, to add all the data to the map, create a new layer, then click on the "Import" button. In the menu that opens, select your xls file or spreadsheet from Google Drive.

In the window that opens, the service will prompt you to select the columns responsible for the location and names of the markers, then click "Finish". In a few seconds, the entire table with data will be loaded onto the map and available for editing.

These are the so-called Scratch cards, which in turn are divided into two subtypes - with sticking or erasing visited places. You can view and buy such cards at bookstore labyrinth.

It is very easy to mark the places where you have been on the map, just take a coin and gently erase the gilded layer. Similar to lottery tickets. Countries on scratch maps are colored differently, and large countries like the USA, Russia and Canada still have internal divisions by states, republics, etc.
