The Temple of Confucius is the place where emperors dedicated sacrifices to the great teacher. It is located in the Shandong province, in the city of Qufu, but once this territory was the capital of the kingdom of Lu, that is, the birthplace of the great teacher.

This temple is built according to the principles of the imperial palace - all the main buildings are located along its central axis, and the auxiliary ones are placed symmetrically on both sides. Its area is strictly rectangular and protected by a red brick wall. At the heart of the whole composition is the increase in the scale of structures - they increase as they approach the central building, which is the highest. There are stone slabs in front of the temple. The courtyard contains more than 2,100 stone steles with inscriptions that praise Confucius. Pedestals under them are made in the form of turtles. There is also a relic of the teacher himself - the oldest well of the Kunov house. The color scheme of all nine courtyards is complemented by dark green pine trees.

In 1499 the temple was destroyed by fire. But today it has been completely restored, and since 1994 it has been on the list world heritage UNESCO. There are several similar temples of Confucius in China, but this one is the largest and most important.

The most important building in the courtyard of the temple is the Palace of Great Achievements with bright yellow glazed tiles. In the very center of the hall there is a statue of Confucius, next to it are statues of his students.

The Temple of Confucius is a landmark that reflects the memory of the philosopher and teacher of all times.

Cave of a Thousand Buddhas

yetra of the Thousand Buddhas is a monument of Buddhist art, a whole cultural heritage China. It is located 33 kilometers from the city of Jinan in the province of Shandong. Its area is 63 meters, it includes more than 210 statues and 43 rock paintings. Once near the cave was the Shentong Temple, which was popularly called "Supernatural Power". Today it has turned into ruins.

The very first Buddha sculpture in the cave was carved by Sha Dun, a 70-year-old monk. This happened in 619 BC. After 25 years, the old monk Ming Di created two more statues. When he felt that his life was coming to an end, he donated money for the carving of new sculptures.

These were the times of the Tang Dynasty, which was against the development of Taoism. The monk took a big risk by creating Buddhist statues. But his faith was unshakable and the purpose of his creations was prayer, and not the expression of his political views.

Despite all the persecution by the state authorities, the carving work did not stop. It was continued by other Buddhists after the death of Sha Dun and Ming Di. To date, the Thousand Buddha Cave has become the largest collection of Buddhist sculptures, statues of Chinese officials and monks in Shandong Province.

Archaeological site of Chenji

The Chenji excavations are located about one kilometer west of Longshan City and about 25 kilometers from Jinan City. The site is located slightly north of the S 102 provincial road and less than 1 km south of Dragon Lake. Also nearby are other attractions - the Mausoleum of Dongping and the Ruins of the old city wall.

The excavations are the first of their kind to reliably confirm the existence of the Luanshan Neolithic culture. The start of excavations in 1928 was a significant step towards understanding the origins of Chinese civilization. Archaeologists at the Chenji excavations believe that this site is the largest Neolithic settlement found to date. The site is protected by the Chinese government and the finds are available at the Chenji Ruins Museum.

The first excavations were carried out in 1930. At that time, it was the first time in history that field excavations were carried out exclusively by Chinese archaeologists using modern methods. Additional excavations of the site were carried out by the Institute of Archeology of China in 1990.

Then the foundations of ancient houses, furnaces and wells, pottery items - ladles, cauldrons, bowls, jugs, as well as stone tools, weapons and bones of oracles were found. Some ceramic objects contained inscriptions in ancient languages.

In the mountain ranges of China, in the province of Shandong, one of the most beautiful Chinese temples, Lianshan, is hidden. It was founded during the Jin Dynasty. This temple is magnificent and majestic, it stands in front of the mountain and consists of 40 halls and 18 pavilions.

The original temple was built in 357, during the reign of Fu Jian. During the Tang Dynasty, Lianshan reached its peak. It has more than forty halls made of natural wood, 500 Buddhist rooms for the monks who lived here at the time of the ascension, and many stone statues, which are among the oldest cultural treasures in China.

There are only 167 stone stupas in the temple, but you will not find two identical ones here. The main attraction of the temple is the hall of a thousand buddhas, which is definitely worth a visit for every tourist.

Source of the Black Tiger

In China, in the town of Jinan, Shandong Province, an artesian karst spring flows. There are 72 springs in these places, but this one is considered the second most important after Baotu. It is called the source of the Black Tiger. And not in vain.

Water circulates from water caves that are hidden in a steep limestone cliff. From the caves, it flows directly into a square pool, and then falls into the old city moat. But the most important thing is that the source appears not just from a rock, but from three jaws of tigers with carved heads made of decorative stone. There is a myth that in ancient times a black stone lay at the entrance to the cave. And only after one person moved it, a roar was heard - it was the sound of water flowing from the mouths. Since then, a pool has formed, which Yang Baizing, the great poet of the Ming Dynasty, sang in his poems.

Zhejiang Fujian Hall

Zhejiang Fujian Hall is the boardroom of successful Chinese merchants. It was built during the Qing Dynasty in the city of Jinan, in China's eastern province of Shandong. The meeting of Zhejiang and Fujian merchants was held in the hall. This building was the last mention of merchants of such a high class.

The meeting room stands on large wooden pillars. Its roof is covered with small green tiles. Once the building had two entrances, but in 1956 the northern gate was closed, leaving only the southern one. The attraction has two main halls.

Jinan has always been the main shopping mall. It was here that entrepreneurs from all regions of China gathered. They built meeting rooms for themselves to develop their activities. Here cooperation was established and big deals were concluded. Only business circles revolved in the hall. There were more than ten such halls in Jinan, but over time they were transformed for completely different purposes. And only the Zhejiang and Fujian hall has survived to our times to remind us that the city of Jinan was and is the most important trading center in China. Until now, merchants do not forget about this and arrange annual festivals and exhibitions in the hall.

Mountain of a Thousand Buds

Thousand Buddha Mountain is considered the main attraction of the city of Zenan. The mountain rises to 258 meters in height. In 1959, around it was formed national park province of Shandong.

In 581-618, when the Sui dynasty ruled, a large number of Buddha silhouettes were carved on the slopes of the mountain and the Temple of a Thousand Buddhas was built, which became very famous after that. Therefore, the mountain bears the same name as the temple. The mountain includes many historical sites and relics.

The temple complex consists of the Laughing Buddha Pavilion, the Daxiong Baodian and Guan-yin Halls, and the Duihua Site. To the southwest of the temple is the oldest inscription - four printed characters carved into the rock.

In the Lishan Pavilion, you can see how Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism harmonize with each other. The Luban and Yulan temples, the Temple of Humility and the Wenchang Pavilion adjoin here.

More than 130 Buddha statues are carved into the mountain, which are located on the southern slope of the mountain. On the opposite side are the Qianlou, Yizu, Jile and Longquan caves.

History of Jinan

The western part of the city of Jinan was part of the principality of Lu, while the eastern part belonged to the principality of Qi. It was a long, long time ago, before our era, during the eras of Spring, Autumn and Warring States. The principality of Qi in 685 BC decided to build a defensive structure - the Qi Great Wall. This construction was on the territory of modern Changqing area.

The Qin kingdom was the strongest of the other kingdoms, and it slowly conquered more and more more territories. In the end, it conquered all the kingdoms. Thus, for the first time, a unified Chinese state was created. After China was divided into districts, which were called - jun. And the western part of Jinan became part of Jibei County (济北郡), at that time the county was called Lixia (历下邑).

Jinan County (济南郡) first appeared during the Han Dynasty and was located on the territory of modern Zhangqiu County. In the IV century AD. The county government was relocated to what is now Licheng District. The construction of Buddhist cave temples began. Thanks to these temples, by the way, their construction went on until the 7th century, Jinan County gained fame as a major religious center.

When the Sui dynasty began to rule (VI century), the district was transformed into a region, which included 10 counties. The area was named Qizhou (齐州). After 500 years, when the Northern Song dynasty already ruled, the region rose in status and became the Jinan Administration (济南府). Then the Jurchens seized these places, but they did not change the management structure of the council.

Then there was the conquest of these lands by the Mongol troops. It went on until, in 1259, the fourth kagan of the Mongol Empire, the grandson of Genghis Khan, the great Khan Mongke, died. Exactly one year later, the Mongolian Civil War. At that time, a Chinese named Li Tan was serving the Mongols, and the Mongols appointed him governor of Shandong Province. So, this Li, seeing that the supporters of Khubilai and Arig-Buga were seriously fighting among themselves, raised a rebellion, stood up for the Song empire and captured the city of Jinan. This happened in 1262. Then Hibulai gathered the best commanders, and they defeated Li Tan with decisive actions. Li had to take refuge in the city and declare a siege. However, the siege lasted only a few months and Li Tan surrendered.

The Mongols ruled this territory for almost 100 years. But they were eventually overthrown and in 1369 the Ming Empire was proclaimed, and the government moved to Shandong Province. By that time, 15 counties and 4 regions were subordinate to her. In 1572, when the Qing Dynasty 3 ruled, the regions withdrew from subjugation and acquired the so-called "direct control" of the provincial authorities.

In 1892, the rapid development of the city began. This happened because the Yellow River carved a new course for itself and connected the city to the Grand Canal and to the inland Chinese waterways.

In 1897 the city was given to Germany. The historic construction of the Qingdao-Jinan Railway began. locals resisted this construction, riots began, which led to the uprising of the Yihetuan.

However, by 1904 Railway was completed and an official trading port was established. This made the city a transport hub of far from the last importance. And by 1912, another railway line Tianjin-Pukouskaya was built, which went along the bridge over the Yellow River. All this only increased the trade and transport significance of the city. Soon the Xinhai Revolution begins. As a result, the unification of administrative units was carried out and in 1913 the Jinan government was disbanded.

In July 1929, the modern city of Jinan was officially formed, and a year later it was divided into 10 districts.

In 1938, during the Sino-Japanese War, Japanese troops occupied the city. Then the civil war began and by 1948 Jinan had passed into the hands of the communists. The People's Government immediately gave Jinan the status of " special city". A year later, the city consisted of 11 districts. In 1950, 6 of these areas were named "urban areas" and 5 "suburban areas". By 1954, there was another change in the administrative-territorial division, i.e. became 5 urban and 5 suburban areas, and they received names instead of digital numbers.

In 1958, the Tai'an Special Region was disbanded and some territories fell under the jurisdiction of Jinan. However, this was not for long, and by 1961 everything returned to its original place. Then the disbandment took place again, and in 1978 Jinan finally became subordinate to Zhangqiu County and Changqing County. After 7 years, Pingyin County also fell under the jurisdiction of the city, and after another 4 years, Jiyang County and Shanghai County joined.

In 1994, in February, Jinan City was awarded the title of a city of "sub-provincial significance", as well as the administrative center of Shandong Province, which it is today.

Economy

After the Yellow River moved into a new direction, the city began to develop actively and in 1852 it became a large market where agricultural products were sold. This was facilitated by the fact that the areas of southern China are very fertile. Soon Jinan began to develop as a center for the clothing and textile industries. In the city in in large numbers mills, oil mills, as well as factories producing paper, cement and matches were built. In the 50s, the construction of a large metallurgical plant began, and a little later, chemical plants. 40 years ago, trucks and construction equipment began to be produced.

The Jinan zone, where new high technologies are mastered, plays a huge role in the economic development of the city. Jinan is a major transshipment base in Shandong Province. There are 768 markets in the city, including 5 public markets, 206 specialized wholesale markets and 343 agricultural markets. It is a major financial center of the province and has 1,400 branches of Chinese banks, as well as offices of various companies.

At the moment, Jinan City is rapidly developing the production of household appliances, information and bioengineering technologies, as well as factories for the production of machine tools with numerical control. Among household appliances, a special place is occupied by washing machines, color TVs and electronic scales. There are well-known brands of knitwear and cigarettes. The priority is the production of special vehicles, dump trucks, heavy vehicles and motorcycles, as well as high-quality household electrical equipment, digital technology and fine-fiber chemicals. Jinan Cuisine

Shandong cuisine is the leading cuisine in the entire Yellow River basin, which is almost ½ of the entire territory of China. This cuisine is famous for the huge range of food products used, the unique skill of cutting and the exact choice of the fire mode. A distinctive feature of Shandong cuisine is that chefs can cook the same dish in different ways, and there are a great many of these ways. Shandong cuisine is divided into three main areas: the first is Jinan cuisine, the second is Jiaodong and the third is Kungfu.

Jinan cuisine is known for its light and low-fat dishes. Due to the fact that the Yellow River, rich in fish, flows through the city, the food in Jinan in most cases is fish and crabs. And due to the fact that the waters of the river make the soil fertile, fruits and vegetables, as well as grain crops, are also at their best here. Favorite seasonings are onions and garlic, although green onions, cabbage, anise, ginger and even sweet beans are used in large quantities.

Soup with chicken meatballs- a very mild soup. Meatballs are served with noodles and chopped fresh green onions.

Fish with red scales- a dish famous in those places is prepared in the restaurants of Jinan. Not any fish is fried in this way, but only a special species that lives in a lake on Mount Zhejiang. The fins of this fish are veined with bright red, and the scales are golden in color. The fish is dipped in oil and fried until a red hard crust. The strangest thing: the fish is striking in its vitality. Even with her belly open, being already in oil, she still beats and wriggles. Therefore, the fish is served to the table with a curved tail.

Carp in sweet and sour sauce- a dish that occupies a special place in Jinan cuisine. Carp is cut on all sides and dipped in beaten eggs. They fry in oil. During frying, the body of the fish bends into a crescent shape. Served on the table necessarily with red sweet and sour sauce.

Dezhou chicken stew. Chickens are raised in a special way. Chickens are cooked so that the finished meat becomes red, easily separated from the bones, but the shape of the carcass itself does not change.

In Jinan, cuisine, price and quality do not always match. Sometimes a simple oyster fried in oil can be paid for as a full meal in a restaurant. And sometimes, on the contrary, the price is low, and the quality, portions and taste of the dish are excellent.

Jinan cuisine is characterized by one distinctive feature - almost all fast food. That is why the dishes remain light and tender. Quietly combined meat with seafood, poultry with vegetables. Basically, the cuisine has a neutral taste and is familiar to Europeans, which cannot be said about other cities and provinces in China.

We will tell you what features the city hides in itself, where it is located, what is remarkable about it, what kind of people live there and what places you should visit. A lot of interesting and informative ahead!

urban features

Jinan is the capital of the province, and its government is also located here. It is quite easy to find the city on the map - it is located four hundred kilometers south of the Chinese capital - Beijing.

The etymology throws back to historical origins - the name translates as "south of the Jishui River." The fact is that earlier this river was located to the north of the city. Now the famous Yellow River, the so-called "Yellow River", flows in its bed.

Jinan is known for its characteristic features.

  • 72 suburban springs and picturesque lakes
  • A large number of artifacts found by archaeologists as a result of excavations. According to existing data, many of them belong to the period before the 20th century BC.
  • Well-established transport infrastructure

The international airport is thirty kilometers away and connects the city with Japanese, South Korean territories, as well as with Hong Kong. In addition, two important railway lines of the country pass through the city: "Beijing - Shanghai" and "Jinan - Qingdao". The last city is a major port in the Yellow Sea. Geography

Jinan is located in northwest China, in the heart of Shandong province. south coast the Yellow River, relatively close to the Yellow Sea. The climate occupies an intermediate position between subequatorial and continental, as a result of which 4 seasons are pronounced:

  • dry warm spring;
  • rainy hot summer - the temperature reaches +30 degrees, and sometimes even higher;
  • autumn with occasional cold weather;
  • dry winter, the average daily temperature rarely drops below 0 degrees, snow also does not fall too often.

To travel to Jinan, it is better to choose the autumn-spring period, when the weather is most comfortable.

The population is approximately eight million inhabitants, and this figure is constantly growing. The vast majority, more precisely, over 98 percent, belong to the Han people, that is, to the indigenous Chinese. The rest are mostly Manchus and Hui.

Many springs hit in the central part of the city and fall into Lake Daming. Baotu is considered the main key - it was called the first in China even by the rulers of the Qing Dynasty. Its temperature remains unchanged all year round and is eighteen degrees.

Another picturesque sight is weeping willows along the ponds, as well as cherry blossoms near the lake. Reservoirs are the venue for local festivals. So, for example, the Lantern Festival is held near the main spring, and the Lotus Flower Festival is held near the Daming shores.

  • Mountain of a Thousand Buddhas

A relatively small mountain peak with a height of more than 250 meters is located thirty kilometers southwest of Jinan. There is a national park right there. But the main feature is over a hundred statues of buddhas, carved in the 6-7 centuries directly from the rock in the south of the hill, temple complex Xinguochang, as well as 4 carved characters.

Every year, a Buddhist festival is held on the slopes of the mountain.

The temple is located on the mountain of the same name and unites the halls of the Buddha who laughs, Daxiong Baodian and Guanyin.

  • caves of a thousand buddhas

Four caves, located on the opposite side of the mountain from the carved sculptures, occupy an area over sixty meters in size. Here you can also find statues of deities carved from stone - there are about two hundred of them, and there are also about fifty images on the rocks.

They were first taken up by the old monk Sha Dun in the 7th century BC - he created three statues. Years later, his undertakings were continued by other Buddhist sculptors.

  • Lianshan Temple

Construction began in the middle of the 4th century. The scale of the building is impressive: forty wooden halls, eighteen pavilions, about five hundred monastic cells, more than one and a half hundred stupas, among which no two are identical.

Next to the square, underground, there is the best shopping mall. The best Jinan souvenirs are handmade wooden fish, products embroidered in the local Lu style and black ceramic products.

    • Lou's kitchen

Exploring the city would be incomplete without tasting the inimitable Shandong cuisine. These are fish with red scales, and carp, which is caught in the Yellow River, cooked in sweet and sour sauce, and oysters fried in oil, and much, much more. However, this cuisine is very spicy, so you need to be prepared for it.
