Rwenzori (Uganda) - exact location, interesting places, inhabitants, routes.

  • Hot tours Worldwide

The lunar mountains, described by the ancient geographer Ptolemy, still attract tourists today. Exactly at national park Rwenzori originates the longest river in the world, the Nile. This park in Uganda is listed world heritage UNESCO.

It is possible to see snow in Africa, but for this you will need a great desire, good physical fitness, as well as climbing skills. To conquer the peaks of the Rwenzori mountains, which are located at an altitude of 5000 meters, you need to be able to use the "cats" and an ice ax. But the most courageous and hardy will rightfully be rewarded for their perseverance.

What to see

On the territory of Rwenzori Park, whose area is about one thousand square kilometers, there is the third highest peak in Africa - Margherita Peak. Only the most desperate will rise here, because its height is 5109 meters. Marguerite Peak, as well as another highest peak of Alexander (it is only a few meters lower than Marguerite - 5091), is located on Mount Stanley.

In Rwenzori, 10 peaks have a height of over 4800 meters.

In total, 10 peaks in Rwenzori have a height of over 4800 meters: these are, for example, Moebius, Elena, Savoy, V. Emmanuel, Edward. To conquer such a height, it will take more than one day. Therefore, stock up on clothes, provisions and, of course, strength.

On the territory of the Rwenzori Park there are mountain shelters where you can spend the night, have a snack or build a fire to cook a full meal.

Experienced hikers know that you need to carefully take care of your equipment, because, climbing to the top of the mountain, in almost a few hours you will get from a hot African summer to a cold snowy winter.

Many animals of the Rwenzori park are listed in the Red Book.

Rwenzori National Park is also known for its unique flora and fauna. So, unique individuals live here, which are not found anywhere else: black and white colobus, bearded monkey, crested turaco. Many animals of the Rwenzori park are listed in the Red Book. Among the unusual representatives of the fauna, one can distinguish a giant heather. There are even special excursions for those who dream of meeting wild animals.

To see gorillas in their natural habitat, you can order a raid, the cost of which will be about 400 USD per hour.

Prices on the page are for November 2019.

One of the features of the mountains of Rwenzori Park that will undoubtedly frustrate photographers is the fog. Fog envelops not only the peaks, but all the mountains. But in the lowland part, you can take pictures in magnificent forests, against the backdrop of beautiful lakes or bewitching waterfalls.

Rwenzori mountains

How to get there

Rwenzori National Park is located near the city of Kasese, which is located 437 kilometers from the capital of Uganda - Kampala. Uganda's main airport, which also receives flights from Russia, is located in Entebbe. Russian tourists can fly here from Moscow using connecting flights of Egyptian, Turkish, Dubai and some other airlines. Minibuses run regularly from Entebbe to Kampala - the interval is only half an hour.

You can get to Kasese from the capital of Uganda by taxi or bus, there are hotels for tourists where you can rest and gain strength before traveling. In Kasese, you can easily find not only guides, but also porters: the local population basically earns in this way. And already from the village of Nyakolengidzha, your conquest of the peaks of the mountains located in the Rwenzori Park will begin.

In the dense and impenetrable jungles of Africa there are mysterious and inaccessible mountains in which the mistress of the night, the Moon, lives. Here she is born and dies. Mountains cannot be seen, there is no sun. Only a few times a year, on a full moon, people can admire their majestic snow-white peaks, which is why they are called the Lunar Mountains ...

This is what is said about these mountains in an African legend that my guide told me. The mention of them is still in Ptolemy, who wrote about the existence in the center of Africa of the mysterious Moon Mountains, giving rise to the great Nile. But it took two thousand years to confirm this assumption. Indeed, the river flowing from the Lunar Mountains Semliki is one of the main sources of the White Nile.

Adventurers were looking for them to take possession of the famous mines of King Solomon, lurking here in the caves. Several well-organized expeditions failed. And this is not surprising: the Lunar Mountains are always covered with clouds, because their other name is Rwenzori, which in the language of the Bakonjo tribe living here means “rainmaker”.

Until 1888, not a single European had seen these mountains. Henry Morton Stanley passed quite close twice, but only on the third attempt did he see them. In his honor high mountain Rwenzori was named Mount Stanley. Only in the 20th century did an Italian expedition led by the Duke of Abruzzi manage to draw up the first map of these places. Himself high peak the duke gave the name Margherita (Margherita), in honor of the Queen of Savoy. Our UN helicopter pilots flying from Uganda to the Congo affectionately call the mountain "Daisy".

The Lunar Mountains are indeed located on the equator, between the lakes of Edward and Albert, on the border between Uganda and Congo (Zaire). Here is the largest glaciation in Africa, and the Daisy (5109 m) on the entire continent is second in height only to the lonely mountains of Kilimanjaro and Kenya of volcanic origin.

According to some reports, the first Russians appeared on Rwenzori only in 2005.
