Tbilisi Sea like. Where to swim and sunbathe near Tbilisi

10.09.2024

For many tourists visiting, the most attractive part of the country is, of course, its rather long coastline. The choice is so great that novice travelers often get lost and cannot immediately decide on a particularly profitable and interesting option.

It’s not surprising, because everyone has their own, unique and inimitable elements of relaxation. So, for example, a small one borders on Turkey and from there it is most convenient to travel from Georgia “abroad” with clothes, there is something to entertain even the most demanding tourists, and tiny Ureki will help treat some diseases in adults and children.

The sea, despite the fact that it washes all resorts equally, also has different physical properties, including temperature. We will talk more about this and more in the article.

What is the sea like in Georgia?

May be useful: If you are thinking of taking your kids with you, be sure to bring them comfortable slippers.

On the Batumi beach, as well as on the beach in the village of Sarpi, there are paid changing cabins. Not everyone, however, uses them.

Along the beaches there are changing cabins, fresh showers, and clean toilets. It is worth noting that the indicated benefits of civilization in Batumi, for example, are paid. To rinse off you have to pay 1 lari GEORGIAN GEL RATE:
1 lari = 0.33 euros;
1 lari = 0.38 dollars;
1 lari = 25.22 rubles;
1 lari = 10.64 hryvnia;
1 lari = 0.85 Belarusian rubles.
, change clothes - 50 tetri GEORGIAN GEL RATE:
0.5 lari = 0.17 euro;
0.5 lari = 0.19 dollars;
0.5 lari = 12.61 rubles;
0.5 lari = 5.32 hryvnia;
0.5 lari = 0.43 Belarusian rubles.
Course and prices may not be accurate.. But since the waters of the Black Sea are not very salty, you can take a shower upon returning to your room or apartment (especially if you live nearby), and change clothes simply by wrapping yourself in a towel.

Sea water temperature in Georgia

Sea water off the coast of Georgia during the season can reach a pleasant +27 °C (according to weather forecasts). In fact, the temperature usually fluctuates somewhere around a comfortable +25 °C. From time to time, the Black Sea experiences cold currents or storms. In the latter case, tourists have to go to or while away the time having fun in local establishments. Some do not pay attention to the slightly cooled water and continue swimming.

The sea will seem warmest to tourists who choose the month of August for their vacation. The water has already warmed up enough, and the air temperature does not scorch due to its proximity to the water, as a result of which there is no stuffiness.

In winter, the sea in Georgia does not freeze. The water temperature rarely drops below +10 °C.

Beaches of Georgia

The coastal strip of Georgia from the border village of Sarpi to the beginning of Abkhazia occupies approximately 105 km. There are several popular resorts with good beaches along this stretch. Most of them are large or small pebbles, but there are also some sandy ones. Wild beaches can also be found, but they are few and inconvenient to get to. To get a little sense of the diversity of the coastal zone, let us briefly describe the popular Georgian resorts.

There is a convenient bike path along the Batumi embankment, there are benches and a convenient descent to the sea.

Recreation and entertainment at sea in Georgia

On popular beaches in Georgia, such as in Batumi, there is always more than enough. The most unusual, perhaps, include: parachute riding, gliding and flyboarding. And in the village of Kvariati, those who want to see the beauty of the underwater depths can contact a specialized diving center. A small note: in small villages, there is nothing like this even close. You will most likely be bored in them.

Where can you go from Georgia and most importantly what?

From Georgia you can organize a short trip to other neighboring countries, such as Turkey, Azerbaijan and Armenia. It’s a little problematic, but also possible, to go to Abkhazia. Some travel agencies offer organized excursions to the listed countries, but most likely it will be too expensive and uninteresting. To travel to Turkey (to pick up things), citizens of the Russian Federation and Ukrainians only need to have a valid passport. Every day minibuses run from Batumi. After crossing the border, you need to take a bus to the cities of Hopa, Kemalpasa or the Instanbul Bazaar shopping center.

Buses from Batumi take tourists straight to the end of the village of Sarpi, to the border with Turkey.

Travelers from Georgia to Azerbaijan and Armenia also need a foreign passport. The most convenient way to get there is by train from Tbilisi. And since 2017, Armenia has been accepting tourists from the Russian Federation even with internal passports.

But to travel to Abkhazia from Georgia you will need an official entry permit and an Abkhaz visa. To do this, you need to fill out an electronic form on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia, send a photocopy of your passport and wait for the result within 5 days. Only with a printed permit and international passport is it worth going to the border (checkpoint near the bridge over the Inguri River). Then, within 3 working days after entry, everyone tourists need to go with a confirmed permit to the consular department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia in Sukhumi and receive the visa itself. Citizens of the Russian Federation and CIS countries are issued it free of charge, but other foreigners will need to pay a visa fee of 660 rubles. Important Feature: You definitely need to return back through the same Inguri checkpoint if you do not want to become persona non grata in Georgia.

Alina's review

Personally, I really liked the Georgian beaches, it was especially pleasant to relax near the Batumi Botanical Garden, in the Cape Verde area. The water seemed amazingly warm and clean, and the beach was almost deserted.

Another pleasant surprise was swimming in the Zhinvali reservoir - a wonderful place for tourists. It is full of amazing places and magnificent views. The water has time to warm up much better than in the sea, and its color fascinates and delights. Swimming in it is really pleasant and comfortable.

Review by Victor

To be honest, the sea is far from the main reason why you should go to Georgia. The beaches here are pebbly. The water will be cleaner than in the version with sand, but going into the sea is not very pleasant, and even difficult for girls.

Georgian resorts do not have particularly clean beaches. Of course, they clean up there, but since tourists are mainly from the CIS, garbage still comes across. But there is also a positive side. Even in Batumi, during the peak tourist season, the beaches are not crowded. There are few tourists. At any time you can find a great place at the very edge of the water.

As a result, I wouldn’t go to Georgia just for the sea, but lying on the beach here after a tiring excursion can be very pleasant.

Resorts and sea of Georgia on the map

On the map we have marked all the resorts listed in the article (so that you can correctly navigate your vacation).

This article is for those who have already become familiar with the main historical and cultural monuments and want to see the nature of Tbilisi. I’ll tell you about the reservoirs that are located within the capital: Lisi and Cherepashye lakes, the Tbilisi Sea. How to get to them, location on the map, photos, where to shop.

Lake Lisi is a great place to relax from the noise of the city. Located on the outskirts of Tbilisi. Some incorrectly call it Fox Lake, probably associating it with foxes. Although it owes its name not to these red predators, but to the marsh grass “fox” that grows along the banks.

The lake itself is small, measuring 800 by 550 meters with a rocky landscape and little vegetation. The maximum depth reaches 4 m.

How to get there:

  • by municipal bus No. 29 from the Station Square or Technical University metro stations. The fare is 50 tetri, paid by card or cash to the driver;
  • a taxi ride will cost 7-8 GEL;
  • personal car. There is paid parking for vehicles.

Lake Lisi is equipped for recreation. In the summer, you can sunbathe on the beach or swim, rent a boat and a catamaran. Tbilisi residents take blankets with them and have a picnic in the shade of the trees. There are also free exercise equipment to keep fit. You can play table tennis, do archery, and there is also a go-kart track here. A playground has been built for the little ones. Nearby there are cafes, vending machines with water and ice cream, and snacks. Around the lake there is a two-lane (bicycle and pedestrian zone) asphalt road 3 km long with benches for rest on the sides.

On the second half of the lake, grass grows, ducks swim and frogs croak, and fishermen catch fish. We even met a small turtle.

Fishing on Lisi

In 2018, under the leadership of the Tbilisi City Hall, the monthly festival “Tbi-Lisi” is held, the goal of which is to introduce the population of the capital to a healthy lifestyle. The festival will take place from April to September on every last Saturday of the month. I was lucky enough to attend the opening of the festival on April 28th. It was fun and interesting.

Festival "Tbi-Lisi"

In recent years, the area adjacent to Lake Lisi has been actively developed. The mayor of the city, Kakha Kaladze, decided to suspend all construction work in order to develop a plan for the development of the area and not spoil the natural beauty of the reservoir.

Turtle Lake is very small. Its dimensions are only 150 by 380 meters, the maximum depth is 2.6 m. It is located within Tbilisi on the slope of Mount Mtatsminda at an altitude of 687 meters above sea level.

In Georgian it is pronounced as Kus Tba. There are two versions of the origin of the name. One says that there used to be turtles in the lake; in another, that the very shape of the lake resembles a turtle.

Howget there:

  • from Vake Park take the cable car. The fare is 1 GEL. Carriage of bicycles is paid additionally - 1 GEL. You need a Metromoney card. The ascent will take 6-7 minutes. From the cabin you can enjoy a view of the park;
  • by car. There is paid parking next to the lake;
  • for a taxi you will have to pay 5-7 lari.

You can go around the lake along a walking path. Almost the entire path is in the shade of trees, because the lake is located in the forest, which means that even in the hot summer the walk will be a pleasure. You will be able to enjoy the clean cool air and listen to the birds singing.

There is a recreation area around the Turtle. For children there is a small playground with trampolines, inflatable slides, and water games. The disadvantage of the site is that it is located under the sun.

Residents of Tbilisi come here to run and exercise on exercise machines, fish or sunbathe. And, of course, go swimming! The entrance to the water is only on one side, the beach has pebbles.

Catamarans are available for rent. The cost of a half-hour walk is 35 GEL.

There are several cafes around the pond, although their prices are a little high.

Nearby is located, which contains houses from all regions of Georgia, reflecting the life of the population in the old days.

Tbilisi Sea (reservoir)

In fact, there is no sea in Tbilisi, there is only a large reservoir in the northeast of the capital. So the locals called it the Tbilisi Sea. To create it, three bitter-salty lakes were flooded in 1952 with the waters of the Iori River. The dimensions of the Tbilisi Sea are 9 by 2.85 km. In spring, the reservoir fills and the maximum depth reaches 45 meters, the average - 26.6 meters.

How to get there:

  • from the Akhmeteli Theater metro station by minibus No. 158 or by bus No. 60 from the Grmagele metro station. You can see the map of Tbilisi metro stations;
  • on .

It is possible to get to the Tbilisi Sea by public transport only from the western and southern sides. To explore the views of the northern part you will have to take a taxi.

In winter, the Tbilisi Sea does not freeze. There were only two exceptions, in 1992 and 2012.

There are several city beaches on the Tbilisi Sea. They are not very clean, but they are free. There are also paid beaches. You should go into the water carefully, because there are small broken stones all around. Sun loungers and umbrellas are available for rent. On weekends in summer the beach is always crowded. Tbilisians come to relax with their families after everyday work.

For entertainment, there is the Gino Paradise Tbilisi water park at the Tbilisi Reservoir. Official website http://ginoparadise.ge. On the beaches you can rent a boat or catamaran, or go jet skiing. There is a yacht club. Cafes and restaurants have been built along the sea.

Next to the reservoir there is a pine forest, where you can take a walk and breathe clean pine air.

Where is it safe to swim in Tbilisi

All three natural reservoirs (Tbilisi Sea, Lisi and Turtle lakes) are safe for swimming. From May to September inclusive, water samples are taken monthly at all beaches. The chemical and bacteriological parameters of the water of the Tbilisi Sea and Turtle Lake correspond to the standards. But in Lake Lisi the concentration of sulfates is increased due to the large amount of vegetation. You can swim in it, but you shouldn't swallow it. After all, sulfates have a laxative effect.

If you want to relax and swim, then the Tbilisi Sea is the best choice. You can also go to Lake Lisi. But I don’t think it’s worth choosing Turtle just for swimming.

Enjoy your stay in Tbilisi!

TBILISI, June 15 – Sputnik. Residents and guests of Tbilisi can safely swim in city reservoirs, since the chemical and bacterial parameters of the water meet the standards, Paata Imnadze, scientific director of the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health of Georgia, told Sputnik Georgia.

Today, there are three natural reservoirs with beaches in Georgia: Tbilisi Reservoir, Turtle Lake and Lake Lisi.

“According to the latest data (water tests in May - ed.) there are no bacteriological contaminants in the capital’s water bodies. Water indicators are good in the Tbilisi reservoir and on Turtle Lake - everything is normal there. The only thing is that in Lake Lisi the amount of sulfates is increased. In principle, you can swim there safe because there is no bacteriological contamination,” Imnadze said.

The increased concentration of sulfates in Lake Lisi is due to the large amount of vegetation in the lake, he noted.

“This is normal for Lake Lisi, there is always an increased concentration of sulfates. People simply should not swallow this water, sulfates have a laxative effect. This is not fraught with other consequences. Tbilisi residents can safely swim there,” Imnadze said, recalling that sunbathers should know measure.

The National Environmental Agency of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Georgia periodically checks the quality of water in Georgian reservoirs.

“With the start of the swimming season in May, we begin to check all three reservoirs of Tbilisi. Samples are taken once a month in the so-called swimming areas where beaches are organized. The check continues until September inclusive,” the head of the environmental pollution monitoring department of the National Environmental Agency Marina Arabidze.

According to an inspection in May, the water in Tbilisi reservoirs is not polluted, she emphasized.

“A test was carried out on 23 chemical and three microbiological parameters. No chemical and microbiological pollution was recorded in Tbilisi reservoirs in all respects, although the concentration of sulfates, calcium and magnesium increased in Lake Lisi. The water in the Tbilisi Sea and Turtle Lake fully complied with the standards,” - said Arabidze.

In Lake Lizi, the norm for sulfates was exceeded four times, calcium - 1.8 times, and magnesium - 1.4 times, Arabidze clarified.

“This is quite normal for Lake Lisi, its natural uniqueness,” she explained.

TBILISI RESERVOIR

The Tbilisi reservoir, with an area of about 11.6 square kilometers, is located in the northeastern part of the capital. The maximum depth of the reservoir is 45 meters, the average depth is 26.6 meters. Due to its large size, Tbilisi residents often simply call it the Tbilisi Sea.

This is one of the favorite places for a beach holiday for residents of the capital. Along the shore of the reservoir there are hotels, a yacht club, restaurants, and other recreation areas. However, visitors appreciate this place for its clean air, picturesque nature and calm atmosphere.

LAKE LISY

A small body of water on the outskirts of Tbilisi - the surface area is 0.47 square kilometers, the maximum depth is four meters. The lake is located in the valley of the Kura River and is surrounded by vegetation. The lake is inhabited by fish, so you can meet fishing enthusiasts here.

Around the lake there is a bike path, exercise equipment, a children's playground, and a cafe.

TURTLE LAKE

Turtle Lake is located three kilometers from the center of Tbilisi on the slope of Mount Mtatsminda. The lake lives up to its name - many turtles used to live in these places. The surface area of the reservoir is less than 0.1 square kilometers, the maximum depth is 2.6 meters. There is a pebble beach around the lake.

Lovers of water catamaran trips usually come here. There are not many swimmers here, but there are many attractions, cafes and restaurants, as well as sports grounds along the lake.

It is difficult to unequivocally answer the question of why tourists seek to spend their seaside holidays in Georgia. Some of them are attracted by the hospitality of the local residents, others are delighted with the national cuisine, and still others are able to endlessly admire the beauty of the Caucasus Mountains. In this article we want to tell you about Georgia’s seaside resorts, prices for holidays and a little about the peculiarities of life in this country.

Batumi

This city is rightfully considered the main Black Sea resort of the country and thousands of tourists come here every summer. You can stay here in one of the many family-type hotels, where you will receive a minimum set of amenities as a reward for a small fee. If you prefer to live in style, there are several five-star hotels at your disposal. All of them will not only provide you with a roof over your head, but will also help brighten up your leisure time. The cost of a room in such a hotel will vary from four to nine thousand rubles, and a room in an unassuming double room will cost about three thousand. You can have fun in this city. The sea will be waiting for you in the central one. In summer, this is the most popular place in the city and it is almost impossible to find free space on the beach. Beach discos, walks along the central half-kilometer boulevard, sightseeing and a rich excursion program await you. In addition, here you can try Adjarian cuisine and fine southern wine.

Georgia. Tbilisi

This diverse city is not only the political or economic, but also the cultural center of the country. Founded on hot springs, Tbilisi is still famous for the sulfur baths of Abanotubani. In this area, you can not only improve your health, but also get simple spa services: massage and bathing. You can have lunch and relax after the procedures in one of the many restaurants or cafes. Experts recommend that tourists order the classic combination of “khinkali plus khachapuri” and, of course, a bottle of Georgian wine. The average lunch costs $12-14 for a sizeable portion. known throughout the world for its rich cultural heritage. Therefore, if you find yourself in this city, do not miss the opportunity to visit its cathedrals, churches, museums and centers of folk crafts.

Summer in Georgia by the sea. Kobuleti

This Black Sea resort is located just 20 km from Batumi on the Black Sea coast. Thanks to its unique microclimate and clean air, Kobuleti is considered one of the best Caucasian health resorts. Doctors recommend people suffering from kidney and liver problems to relax here. Tourists come here not only on vouchers, but also in the old fashioned way, as “savages”. Fortunately, there are no problems with housing here, since not only expensive hotels, but also homeowners in the private sector are ready to accommodate travelers. The cost of a room at this resort is not much different from the cost of a room in Batumi. For example, hotel accommodation for a day with three meals a day will cost 50 to 110 USD. Do not forget that you will have the opportunity to undergo treatment at the nearest hospital, where the cost of the procedure varies from seven to twenty USD.

Kvariati

This small and quiet village is considered one of the best resorts in Adjara. It is located near the Turkish border near Batumi. The Black Sea in Georgia is found in Kvariati with long and wide beaches. Despite the apparent modesty of this settlement, tourists can get everything they need here: there are umbrellas with sun loungers on the beaches, there are inflatable mattresses for children, and for adults, however, the main charm of this small resort is the first and so far only diving center in the country. To tell you the truth, you won't find fabulously beautiful reefs or fish locally. However, diving will be able to entertain you, which means you should not refuse this opportunity. If you get bored here, you can easily take a regular bus to Batumi and spend your time as you want. This small resort has not very developed infrastructure, and therefore there are few good hotels. Therefore, tourists often rent housing in the private sector: a bed for a day can be bought for seven dollars, and a room - from 35.

Ureki

If you are determined to spend your holiday under the hot sun and visit the sea in Georgia, then you should pay attention to this resort. It is famous for its beaches with black magnetic sand, which has no analogues in the whole world. Along the five-kilometer beach area there are many hotels, small bungalows, sanatoriums, as well as restaurants and cafes. Families with small children come here with pleasure, since the entrance to the water is almost everywhere flat, and the sea is not too deep. If you move 200 or even 300 meters from the shore, you will remain standing waist-deep in water. The resort's fresh and clean air is provided by a forest belt of eucalyptus and pine trees that runs along the entire coast.

Cape Verde

This wonderful resort is popular not only among tourists, but also among local residents. It is located near Batumi, just nine kilometers away. Not far from the village there is the world famous Botanical Garden, which vacationers enjoy visiting almost every day. Many rare plants grow here, which thousands of tourists come to admire every day. In Cape Verde you can stay either in a specialized hotel or in the private sector. Guests of the village claim that they are always greeted with open arms, and the warmth of the owners remains beyond praise.

Conclusion

A seaside holiday in Georgia always leaves tourists with a lot of impressions. Many people fall in love with this country so much that they come here year after year. And this is not surprising, since you want to admire the unique sea and mountain landscapes again and again, get acquainted with the culture of the local population, explore famous sights, architectural monuments and, of course, enjoy national cuisine.

Tbilisi Sea- this is the unofficial name of a huge reservoir located to the northeast of and is a favorite vacation spot for townspeople. It was created in the middle of the last century with the aim of supplying the capital of Georgia with water, and for this purpose three lakes and several surrounding villages were flooded with the waters of the Iori River.

The length of the Tbilisi Sea is 9 km, width 3 km, maximum depth 45 m. In the spring, the reservoir is filled with water and then released throughout the rest of the year - as a result, the water level fluctuates up to 10 m. Interestingly, in winter the reservoir does not freeze, it is covered with ice covered only twice in its entire history - in 1992 and 2012.

In addition to purely utilitarian purposes, the Tbilisi Sea is used by townspeople as a “huge park of culture and recreation”: the reservoir has several equipped beaches, an excellent modern water park with a large spa area, and on a hill above the water rises one of the most interesting monuments of Tbilisi: "History of Georgia". This is where we will begin our next walk around Tbilisi.

Monument History of Georgia (Chronicles of Georgia)

Already on the approach to the huge black columns, Tsereteli’s name comes to mind and his Moscow “Peter I” comes to mind - and, as it later turns out, not in vain. “The History of Georgia” is also the result of the inspiration and imagination of the most prolific Georgian sculptor, who worked on this creation for 20 years, from 1983 to 2003!

The monument is made in the form of 16 huge cruciform steles, 35 meters high, each of which is decorated with 4 bas-reliefs on biblical subjects and events from the history of the country. There are no explanatory inscriptions, but even without them you can identify the great Georgian poet Rustaveli, King Bargat (founder of the famous Bagrationi dynasty), Queen Tamara, and the founder of Tbilisi, King Vakhtang Gorgasali.

Next to the stelae there is a church - clearly a remake in appearance, but quite beautiful:

From the walls of the church there is a wonderful view of the northern part of Tbilisi and the Tbilisi Sea:

How get there to"History of Georgia«: You can get there by car or walk from the Tbilisi Sea. In principle, there is a road to the monument from the residential areas of Gldani and Guramishvili, but I couldn’t drive there in my car - at some point it turned into a dead dirt road, and I decided not to risk it.

If you drive from the direction of the reservoir, you can enter these coordinates into your navigator: N41.76835, E44.80866, this is the turnoff to the monument from the main road going around the Tbilisi Sea.

Tbilisi Sea

Almost under the monument History of Georgia one of the best beaches on the Tbilisi Sea is located:

With some stretch, the beach in this place can be called pebble, but in fact it is not pebbles, but small stones - which is not surprising, given the artificial origin of the Tbilisi Sea.

There are usually a lot of vacationers in the summer on weekends, the infrastructure on the beach is very minimal: sun loungers, umbrellas, changing cabins, trash cans, during the season you can rent a boat or catamaran. In general, the entire organization of relaxation on the beach gives a somewhat “handicraft” impression, and this has its own charm:

Staircase made from used tires

Since this is a city beach, you can’t expect crystal cleanliness from it - cigarette butts, cigarette packs, bags, etc.

It is advisable to swim in special rubber slippers - since the reservoir is artificial, there are not pebbles along its banks, but rather ordinary broken stones. And the edges of these stones can be quite sharp. Well, in sunny weather the pebbles get very hot, walking on them barefoot is not comfortable. Otherwise, it’s a great vacation spot within the city; we drove from ours to the beach by car in about 20 minutes, depending on traffic. Plus, nearby is the “History of Georgia”, a water park, an arboretum - in a word, a strategically very good and convenient place to relax. Of course, this is not sea or, but if you want to relax by the water and there is no way to get out of the city, the Tbilisi Sea is a very good option.

Between the road and the reservoir there is a wonderful pine forest with incredibly tasty air:
