All coordinates are given in the WGS 84 world coordinate system.
WGS 84 is used in the GPS global positioning and navigation satellite system.
Coordinates (latitude and longitude) determine the position of a point on the Earth's surface. The coordinates are angular values. The canonical form of representing coordinates is degrees (°), minutes (′) and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use the representation of coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes or in decimal degrees.
Latitude takes values from −90° to 90°. 0° - latitude of the equator; −90° - latitude of the South Pole; 90° - latitude of the North Pole. Positive values correspond to northern latitude (points north of the equator, abbreviated N or N); negative - southern latitude (points south of the equator, abbreviated as S or S).
Longitude is measured from the prime meridian (IERS Reference Meridian in the WGS 84 system) and takes values from −180° to 180°. Positive values correspond to east longitude (abbreviated as E or E); negative - western longitude (abbreviated as W or W).
Height above sea level shows the height of a point relative to conventional sea level. We use a digital elevation model

Today we return again to our journey through the vast expanses of the delightful and unique Iceland. By the way, some footage from the film “Interstellar” was filmed in these parts, which is very popular and reaches great heights in worldwide ratings. If you missed the first parts of our epics, here you go travel navigation:

Way North

Here, on the edge of the Arctic Circle, on the way to the north of Iceland, I finally got this chance. I will visit the 65th parallel of northern latitude and in a short time I will be able to see places where the elements shape the way of life. Places where people live in temperatures below zero for months on end, where there is 24-hour darkness in the winter and 24-hour sunshine in the summer. There are no big cities, no radio communications, and you won't meet a single celebrity here.

It was the middle of summer, but the air temperature did not reach ten degrees Celsius. The howling wind blew forcefully at my back.

When I saw the landscape here, four words came to mind: wild, untouched, isolated... paradise.

Akureyri

Tourist brochures described Akureyri as " northern capital Iceland." The oldest part of the city is located on a narrow cape called Oddeiri, on the edge of the Eyjafjord. The more modern parts of the city lie in the hills north of the Glera River. Against the backdrop of picturesque mountains with snow-capped peaks, the city seems tiny.

Akureyri is like Reykjavik's shy little sister – sweet but quiet. This city greeted us with the promise of a long-awaited and much-needed vacation. The insatiable desire to try to see everything possible, at any time of the day or night, took its toll - it was time to take a breath and indulge in pleasures like enjoying charcoal pizza in the hotel room and watching Icelandic television programs on how to cook smoked cod. And dream of the magnificent landscapes that I have yet to see.

Godafoss Waterfall is located on the Skjaulvandafljout River, which flows through the town of Báurðardalur in the north. Mountainous hills frame the horseshoe-shaped waterfall. Godafoss is truly special because it is associated with one of the most important milestones in Icelandic history - the conversion of the country's inhabitants to Christianity in 1000 AD. e.

Thorgeir Thorkelsson was a pagan leader called upon to resolve differences between Christians and pagans who worshiped the old gods of the north - the Ases. Even though he worshiped pagan gods, Thorgeir decided that the Icelanders should be converted to Christianity. As proof of his commitment to the new faith, he threw the idols of the old gods into a waterfall. This is where the name of this waterfall comes from (Godafoss is translated from Icelandic as “waterfall of the gods”).

The road from Akureyri snaked between picturesque cliffs on both sides of the highway. As we climbed the mountain pass, an amazing view opened up in front of us. We arrived at the Ehsnadalur valley. We stopped by the road and had lunch while looking into the distance. Even short road stops did not stop us from reflecting on the beauty of Icelandic nature. Neither of us said a word, we just sat and watched the clouds rush over the valley.

Vedlir

Vedlir is nothing more than a group of small farms. If you turn away for a moment, you will miss it. Stop and you will see an example of life in the harsh northern winter. The countryside is dotted with abandoned farms, dilapidated barns and other chilling reminders of how hard village life in Iceland can be.

However, for photographers, heathland and farmland landscapes can provide picturesque subject matter.

“The known world huddles under the neat arch of the north, and on the edge of the western ocean drifts a fragment of a new world, looking at us as if from the slits of a mask.”

Visiting the settlement of Glömbair is like going back in time in a time machine. The site is mentioned in the Vinland Saga as a farm built by Gudrid and Thorfinn and their son, Snorri, after they failed to settle in Vinland. If the legends are true, Snorri is the first European born in the New World, and the structure they erected after their travels to Vinland dates back to 1000 AD. e.

If you want to relax and enjoy wonderful views, you should visit Blönduous. This small seaside town in northern Iceland is famous for its salmon fishing. The Blanda River is one of those fishing spots that fishermen love to chat about over a hearty dinner and a couple of glasses of strong drink.

The average weight of salmon that can be caught in this river is about 4 kg. During the fishing season, up to 3,000 salmon are caught in the river. My dad would definitely love it here - casting a fishing rod in the river and waiting for the monster salmon to take the bait.

Hvammstangi

Hvammstangi is a village located on east coast Midfjardara river. According to Grettir's Saga, a large-scale cavalry battle took place at this site. We were going to visit the Brekkülaikur farm, a few kilometers from the main highway.

Here you can find a hotel with traditional Icelandic furnishings and national cuisine, a riding school and a base for fly fishing enthusiasts. Here we had a wonderful opportunity to see Icelandic horses and one very diligent shepherd dog up close.
