Ski resort Bohinj - Slovenia. Lakes Bled and Bohinj in Slovenia

05.03.2024

Now it's time for the last post about our trip to Slovenia. It will be entirely dedicated to Lake Bohinj: we will walk along the right bank of the lake, and also learn the main legend of the local area.
It must be said that this coast is wilder; there is only a walking trail here, quite narrow, very rocky in places. Much fewer tourists reach these wonderful places than the waterfall and cable car.

We will start, however, traditionally, in the area of the bridge and the church. A textbook view of the village of Rybchev Laz

Near the pier there is a monument to Zlatorog, the legend of which forms the basis of local folklore

In general, everything is quite typical, somewhat reminiscent of Bazhov. There once lived in the vicinity of Triglav a beautiful chamois with golden horns. Zlatorog guarded the country of mysterious white women, which probably contained many treasures. And so a certain hunter, wanting to please his beloved, set out to get the horns of the magic chamois. He tracked down the goldenhorn and wounded it, but only from the blood of the chamois that spilled on the ground, wonderful flowers immediately grew (edelweiss, as one version claims). Zlatorog ate them, instantly healed from the wound and was gone. The hunter eventually fell into the abyss. And the white women and Zlatorog have since left these places forever. Here is a more detailed and colorful option. In general, as always, greed and female cunning are to blame for everything :)

View of the lake from the bridge. More precisely, this is not a lake, but a small bay, so the base of the reservoir is not visible

Small trout move in shallow water in large numbers. I don’t know if the fish we tried was caught in the lake, but they cooked it wonderfully

The landscapes are fabulous and peaceful

The most beautiful thing, perhaps, is the morning fog slowly dissipating over the lake.

Somewhere around 8 o'clock

There are a lot of ducks there, but I didn’t see any swans, unlike Bled

Well, now you can start the actual walk. A sign at the beginning of the path will kindly tell everyone that Lake Bohinj is the largest and deepest in Slovenia (45 meters at its deepest point).

We begin our hike, about 5-6 kilometers. wonderful weather

The fish is not shy, to put it mildly

By the way, it is impossible to determine the size of the lake from any point on the shore. But we saw everything from above last time :)

Here are the alpine meadows for you

But we almost never saw cows grazing, despite the fact that there are a lot of them in Staraya Fuzhin. Apparently, they eat in strictly designated places

The wind has picked up, the perfect mirror is not working

Hills, houses, a dream of artists and photographers

And the mountains, of course

Here we caught a moment of calm

Along the way we came across a couple of such structures. They resemble drinking bowls, but the water is cloudy

And here is a familiar tourist boat, which we didn’t have time to get on from the funicular, but we’ll get there today

And the clouds are gathering little by little

Halfway along the way we came across a half-abandoned gatehouse and several dozen wells like this behind the fence. Again, I can only assume that these are some kind of wastewater treatment plants

Around the path

And again the lake

An exceptionally picturesque stone that is pleasant to stand on

We met almost no one along the way

And here there are icons at the crossroads

But this is quite interesting. A real stone river

It’s interesting what happens here at the moment of active snow melting, how powerful the flow is. Seems like he could be really solid

If there are a lot of mice on the opposite bank, then here, among the stones, is a real paradise for lizards. This is a viviparous lizard, it appears to be male

The familiar funicular on the opposite bank

We went to see Savitsa. Interesting water color

Tourist boat pier near the campsite, near Ukanets

Shot from the board

Another representative of the local fauna

Of course, I regret that because of the weather on the last day it was not possible to go to another waterfall or climb a hill from which a very good view of the lake opens. But in fact, it’s a sin to complain, because Lake Bohinj is the rainiest place in all of Slovenia. And more often it happens like this

And just like that

Panoramas, as usual, are at the end of the post, for the most patient :) Enjoy your contemplation!

Close your eyes and try to imagine the picture: you are standing on the shore of a beautiful lake surrounded by the Alps. The waters of the lake are so clean and transparent that they reflect all the splendor of the mountains covered with emerald greenery. Breathe in the fresh mountain air, slightly damp from the nearby water, and listen to the singing of the birds singing of this beauty... A fairy tale? Possible, but very real! Now open your eyes... in front of you is Lake Bohinj!

Lake Bohinj (Bohinjsko jezero) (3.18 km²) is of glacial origin, located at an altitude of 525 m above sea level and surrounded on three sides by the Julian Alps. The lake got its name from the Slovenian word “Boh”, which means God.

On a huge boulder lying near the water, a slender capricorn, Zlatorog, stands proudly. Its horns sparkle in the rays of the dazzling sun, and the gentle wind from the lake whispers about this magical creature.

Bohinj is part of Triglav National Park and is one of the most picturesque places in Slovenia. This is pristine nature, stunningly beautiful landscapes, crystal clear air, diversity of flora and fauna. Lake Bohinj is a world-famous resort both for lovers of a quiet, contemplative holiday, and for those who engage in active sports.

Let us say a huge thank you to Baron Sigismund Zois (1747-1810), who lived on the lake in the second half of the 18th century. Being a sociable and far-sighted person, the baron, using his authority, often invited his friends and acquaintances to visit. Hearing praise from them about these places, Zeuss decided to create a resort here, which over time gained such enormous popularity.

Now we can endlessly list the advantages of this place. In winter, Bohinj is famous for people of different ages and different abilities, and in summer it is a place for hiking, paragliding, swimming in the lake, cycling, sightseeing flights in hot air balloons, fishing and trips on canoes or catamarans.

More than a hundred routes of varying complexity will lead travelers through fabulous and extraordinary places, through gorges and mountains, along forest paths and alpine meadows - everywhere they will encounter incredible beauty and fantastic landscapes.

For many years, Bohinj has been a permanent destination for lovers of rafting, canyoning, paragliding and mountaineering. Even the highest peak in Slovenia, Mount Triglav, is accessible not only to experienced climbers, but also to less prepared simple connoisseurs of nature.

There are dozens of villages around the lake. The locals are very hospitable and will be able to provide excellent conditions for their guests. Travelers are greeted here by hotels, apartments, tourist farms, private guesthouses and cozy rural houses with haylofts for overnight stays. And numerous taverns (gostilne), famous not only for their excellent home cooking, but also for the size of their portions, will always welcome you.

Bohinj has a very well developed tourist infrastructure: travel and excursion bureaus, car and sports equipment rentals, restaurants, bars, discos, shops, sports facilities - all this will help diversify an already amazing holiday.

Bohinj is also a favorite place for avid fishermen. The lake is home to perch, roach, pike, tench, madder, carp, pike perch and other species of the underwater kingdom. The clearest lake water, a rich underwater world and a breathtaking alpine landscape will allow you to enjoy fishing and have a wonderful rest in nature.

The lake is well known in Europe for the production of its -

Lake Bohinj, located next to the main Slovenian pearl - Lake Bled, is not so popular among travelers, but in vain.

If Bled is a respectable, fashionable resort, intended for leisurely walks along the evening embankments, learning to play golf at the local golf club or while away time in numerous cafes on the shore of the lake, then Bohinj is a primitive, almost untouched nature, clean mountain air and almost no tourists.

Those for whom comfort and civilized joys of life in the form of discos, bars, comfortable beaches and developed tourist infrastructure are definitely not worth going to the shores of Lake Bohinj. But those who like wild holidays and life in a campsite should visit the vicinity of Lake Bohinj (although, to be objective, there are also hotels in villages near Bohinj, but there are much fewer of them compared to Bled). Lake Bohinj, first of all, is peace and relaxation.

Which is better – Bled or Bohinj? Which lake to choose for relaxation? How to get there and what is worth seeing in the surrounding area. Where to stay for the night and how much does lake paradise cost in Slovenian?

The main impression after this trip was the fact that on these lakes there is absolutely NO feeling that you have already seen it somewhere. And we saw quite a lot.

Lake Bled– the calling card of Slovenia and the number one tourist attraction, a must-visit destination. Bled is a postcard photogenic Slovenia, which tourists love so much to quickly collect the cream of the main attractions of the region.

To see Bled and the surrounding area one day is enough. The shores of the lake are rolled into asphalt and decorated with multi-star hotels where Europeans spend time, admiring the panorama of the lake from the balconies of hotel rooms and terraces of restaurants.

Lake Bohinj– the largest lake in Slovenia and the starting point for active exploration Triglav National Park, including a climb to the highest peak of the Julian Alps - Triglav. Bohini has less asphalt, more natural sandy beaches and more hiking trails in the surrounding area.

If Bled– this is from the series “see, admire and move on” then Bohinj More suitable for multi-day active or measured passive recreation.

The ideal option is to spend most of your time on Bohinja and devote one or two days to Lake Bled. The distance between these two natural attractions is only 26 km.

Where are lakes Bohinj and Bled?

Lakes Bohinj and Bled are located in the Julian Alps in the territory of the only Triglav National Park in Slovenia.

Lake Bled is closer to Ljubljana - it is only 54 km away, and even closer from the airport - less than an hour by bus/car.

Lake Bohinj is 83 km away. from Ljubljana, a bus from the capital takes about 2 hours, by car – 1.5 hours on a good road.

How to get to Lake Bohinj and Bled

The route is as follows: Ljubljana AP – Bohinjsko Ezero. Ljubljana AP means Ljubljana AVTOBUSNA POSTAJA (Ljubljana bus station)

Ljubljana Bus Station is located just 500 meters from the city center – the three-bridge.

Alternative way to get there– include Lake Bohinj in route around Slovenia and go on a road trip.

You can rent a car in Ljubljana or Budapest - it is convenient and cheaper to fly to this city from Kyiv or travel around Europe with your own car. As always, everything depends on your goals.

The distance from Budapest to Lake Bohinj is 550 km.

The distance from Kyiv to Lake Bohinj is 1700 km.

Lake Bohinj, Where to stay

In the vicinity of Lake Bohinj there are three settlements that you can choose for recreation and overnight stay. They are clearly visible on the map map, which can be obtained from the information center - Stara Fuzina, Ribcev Laz and Ukanc.

Rybchev Laz (RibcevLaz)

The most party place in Bohinja is located directly on the shore of the lake. Housing here is more expensive than in the other two locations, and it is sold out quite quickly before the start of the season. If your priority is comfort, a view of the lake and proximity to all tourist attractions - choose Ribchev Laz.

Stara Fužinazina)

The most affordable place to stay in the vicinity of Lake Bohinj. A quiet, peaceful holiday surrounded by mountains - this is about Stara Fuzina. Housing is usually private village houses converted into mini hotels. The rooms have a balcony, a small kitchen, and a room. You can find apartments for around 50 Euro per night.

Stara Fužina is chosen by those who are not afraid to walk a lot. The village is located 2 kilometers from Lake Bohinj. If you are planning a holiday with children for more than three days and are planning to spend passive time near the water, it is better to choose Ribchev Laz.

Stara Fuzina– for active travelers if hiking and a varied daily program are a priority. We lived in Staraya Fuzhin.

Ukants (Ukanc)

“Bear Corner” of Lake Bohinj, there are houses for rent and many mini hotels. From here there are many hiking trails along the Savitsa River and to the waterfalls.

Near the village of Ukanc there is the only campsite on the lake - a fun tourist spot. There is also a good cafe-bar overlooking the lake where European tourists like to spend time over a glass of beer.

What to do on Lakes Bohinj and Bled

Hiking, sightseeing, short cycling trips, walks on the lake on kayaks, canoes, boats, paragliding, beach holidays - Lake Bohinj has several beaches, including remote and secluded ones, even during the peak season (July-August).

Main attractions on lakes Bohinj and Bled

Lake Bled

I'll start with the more touristy Lake Bled - it's also main attraction of Slovenia and the country's business card.

The main attraction of Lake Bled is the ancient castle on the top of the mountain. Most bus tourists arrive here at the foot of the mountain and walk up to the castle. The castle itself is ordinary, there are hundreds of them in Europe. Of interest is the view of the lake, for which we spent a couple of hours.

In the middle of Lake Bled there is a small island on which there is a chapel of the same name, which gives a postcard-like view of the lake from almost any point. Inside the chapel, an ancient bell has been preserved, about which tourists are told various tales.

On the shores of Lake Bled there are two main beaches for tourists - they are located near the Park Hotel.

Opposite the hotel Vila Bled there is another unequipped beach. I had no desire to swim in the lake. Lake Bohinj is better suited for this.

Lake Bohinj

On Bohini there is no such beautiful castle as on Lake Bled, but here there is an incredibly beautiful sunrise and in summer you can see clouds a few meters from the surface of the water.

In the city Rybchev Laz, which is located on the shore of the lake, look Church of John the Baptist, founded in the 11th century.

Bridge over the Ozernitsa River, which originates in Lake Bohinj. By the way, the Ozernitsa river immediately beyond the lake merges with another river, Mostnitsa, and their union forms the Sava river, which flows all the way into the Black Sea.

Beaches on Lake Bohinj, there are quite a lot of them in Ribchev Laz and further along the perimeter. The entrance to the water is finely pebble mixed with lake sand. The depth gain is quite fast; the water temperature in August was around 23 degrees. In June the water is still quite cold.

Savica Waterfall– a small waterfall near the Savitsa river in the west of the lake, the hiking trail to it starts from the town Ukants (Ukanc), travel time is less than an hour.

Hiking trek around Lake Bohinj. An easy route for beginners or families with children, it takes about three hours. I recommend making stops on the deserted beaches on the northwestern side of Lake Bohinj.

Climbing Mount Vogel. You can climb to the top of Vogel, which offers views of Lake Bohinj, by ski lift, which is located near the campsite. Open all year round.

In winter on Lake Bohinj you can ski, but given the price/quality ratio and the proximity of Austria, this is a rather strange idea for tourists. Mostly locals ride.

Triglav National Park

Triglav National Park– it was founded back in 1924 by a Slovenian botanist named Fran Jesenko. By the will of fate, he also died in these places during a trip with students to the valley of the Triglav Lakes. Walking routes in Triglav Park- the main goal of many tourists in these parts.

Top of Triglav(2864 m) - the highest point of the Julian Alps, located in the national park of the same name. The route to the summit begins in the town of Stara Fuzina. But if you want to do it in one day, it’s better to get to the high-mountainous village of Rudno Pole (1347 m) and start from there.

Before Rudno Pole You can get there by taxi or by car, your own or rented. You can leave your car in the parking lot while you climb to the top. It is better to start early in the morning at dawn. The hike will take a whole day.

The trails for climbing Triglav are marked; a trail map can be purchased at the tourist office in the villages of Ribcev Laz or Stara Fužina.

Which is better Bled or Bohinj

Relax in a beautiful hotel with a postcard view - this is Bled.

Actively walking through the mountains, watching the sunrise and swimming in turquoise lake water - this is Bohinj.

Holidays on Lake Bohinj are cheaper and more varied, Bled is expectedly more expensive and more crowded.

I recommend trying both options and forming your own opinion, especially since both of these amazing places are nearby.
