How to get to Ochamchira. Ochamchira resort town by the sea - Abkhazia, and a few words about modern Abkhazia

10.02.2024

Ochamchira is a sparsely populated resort village located on the Black Sea coast, at the mouth of the “modest” Galidzga River. This town is the oldest settlement in the entire territory of Abkhazia. Founded back in the 4th century. BC, by Greek merchants, and was named Guenos. Then the city developed intensively, and in the 13th-14th centuries, the Ala-Gunda trading post was formed on the site of the town. Then the trading post suffered a collapse; during the period of Turkish domination, everything in this territory fell into disrepair, the town was deserted, abandoned buildings remained, which were subsequently overgrown with boxwood thickets. That is why the Turks gave the name in their own way “Shamshir”, which literally means boxwood or boxwood grove. This is where the town got its name Oshimshir; later, for better pronunciation in the local dialect, the town began to be called Ochamchira.

At this time, it is no longer a city, not even a town, but rather a village that has fallen into complete disrepair. The village is very small. The buildings consist of one-story, or at best two-story wooden houses (mostly dilapidated), there are no asphalt roads, and where they were there were holes and potholes (consequences of the military operations of 1992-1993).

The general impression of the village is complete devastation and squalor. Dirty cows, buffalos, pigs and chickens roam the streets (where instead of roads there are only directions) wander. And all this “splendor” against the backdrop of dilapidated, abandoned houses. A terrible picture.

Local aborigines were not known for their hard work at the best of times, and even more so now. The local authorities are doing nothing to raise everything from ruin or at least put in order what remains. And the legacy of the former union was great. Decent boarding houses, recreation centers, there were even pioneer camps. Now a small fraction of this “wealth” has been preserved, but all that has been done is a little touch-up, and that’s all. In general, the village of Ochamchira was never famous as a popular resort; even in Soviet times, there were rarely many vacationers in the boarding houses; people from other Soviet republics were rare guests. Basically, the village was popular among “its own people” and was positioned more as a quiet, calm, family resort.

To this day we cannot remember this semblance of a holiday without shuddering. It all started at the border, where, according to the transfer services we paid for, we were supposed to be met by a representative of the Samshit boarding house. We waited for this little man for about an hour, and when he still didn’t get it, we decided to get there on our own. When we booked a room at the boarding house, we were told that it was 50 kilometers from the border to the boarding house. Don't believe it. Three times more. The roads are terrible, if you compare the military tankodrom with what we were driving on - the autobahn. We drove for more than 3 hours, the price was wild, from 3 to 5 thousand rubles, you definitely have to bargain. Of course, upon arrival at the boarding house we received a lot of apologies, the administration asked us to “get into the situation.” But during the entire “rest” I constantly had to “get into the situation” for one reason or another. Not only us, all the vacationers “got into the situation” every now and then.

The boarding house provides rooms of various categories of comfort to the services of vacationers, but we must again “get into the situation” because a semi-luxury room is a semblance of an economy class room (it’s scary to imagine what an economy room in a boarding house is like). The room was located opposite the public toilets and laundry - the aroma was not boxwood groves. There is no balcony in the room, there is no place to dry clothes and resort supplies. The furniture is on the verge of destruction, the beds are narrow and uncomfortable - a legacy of the USSR. The only joy is that the room has a refrigerator (in which there is nothing to put anything. There are no shops in the village), an air conditioner, albeit old, but in good condition. There was a creaky cabinet and so on in other small things (a carafe with water from the tap, which is better not to drink).

Meals in the boarding house are served three times a day, in its own dining room. As you understand, we need to “get into the situation again.” Egg usurpation is what I would call nutrition. Breakfasts were a complete torture, they only cooked eggs (omelet or scrambled eggs with mayonnaise), the cooks didn’t have enough culinary imagination for more. We tried to order at least porridge for breakfast, but the answer was clear - no. Porridge for children. Scrambled eggs for adults. They don't serve fruit, compotes are similar to the Yuppie drink (if anyone remembers what kind of disgusting thing that is). Lunches are lean and tasteless. Nightmare. There is an alternative to table food on the territory of the boarding house - a snack bar (patskha in local). Believe me, it’s better to eat in the canteen.

Anyone who has been to the Crimean peninsula and seen the public beach in Alushta, know that in comparison with the beach in the village of Ochamchira, the beaches of Alushta are a nature reserve listed in the Red Book. It feels like the beach in the village has never been cleaned at all. Cows roam around it

the shepherds wash them right away. Horror. There are no resort entertainments, this is probably futile. There aren't even old catamarans, it's a complete wilderness.

Not far from the boarding house there is a local market. This is where all those who like to make scandals belong. Boor on boor and drives boor. People are angry because of their poverty; they look at all vacationers like occupiers. Fruits (apples, peaches can only be bought in the morning), but the prices are simply astronomical. There is not just no evening entertainment, there is none at all. You can sit in the snack bar on the territory of the boarding house in the evening and drink local wine. But, God forbid you go for a walk outside the territory in the evening, at best you will be left without valuables (this was the instruction we were given by the private owner who was taking us to the boarding house).

If you want to go on excursions, organize them yourself. Because you will have to “get into the situation” again and not go on the excursion for one reason or another. There will be a lot of reasons for refusal, the main thing is to “get into the situation.” We simply “ran away” from there, from this terrible “resort” without regret.

It is noteworthy that a local private owner who kindly agreed (for 3,000 rubles) to take us to the border asked us a question that still has no answer. He simply asked: “What were you doing here anyway?” The answer was our silence, since there was really nothing to say.

Ukrainians have a good saying about this, translated as follows: A cheap fish is a stinking fish.

The Abkhazian city of Ochamchira is located on the Black Sea coast. The city is located at an altitude of five meters above sea level. The city has a Mediterranean subtropical climate.

The ancient name of the city is Guenos. The city of Ochamchira was founded by Greek colonists more than two and a half thousand years ago. Today this city is the center of the Ochamchira region.

The most ancient city of Abkhazia

Ochamchira is the oldest settlement in Abkhazia. In the fourth century BC, the small Greek town of Guenos arose on the site of the modern city. In the 14th century, Genoese merchants created the Ala-Gunda trading post, which allowed them to develop active trade with many Caucasian peoples. In subsequent centuries, during the reign of the Turks, the trading post suffered a decline. The surrounding area of the trading post is overgrown with impenetrable boxwood forests. Then the city received its later Turkish name - Oshamshir, which later turned into Ochamchira (from Turkish the word “shamshir” is translated as boxwood grove).

From the second half of the 19th century, depopulated and devastated Ochamchira began to turn into a small urban-type village. Since the beginning of the 20th century, Ochamchira has become a trading port. From this city, valuable timber and agricultural products were exported to the Black Sea harbor and abroad. The appearance of the city changed significantly in the 20s of the XX century. Since that time, Ochamchira has become the administrative center of a large agricultural region. The seaside town is now surrounded by vast tobacco and tea plantations, the harvest of which is processed by tobacco and tea industry enterprises.

More and more tourists began to visit Ochamchira in the 70-80s of the 20th century. Camp sites and recreation centers were built for them. Lovers of antiquity will find something to see in this city. First of all, these are the remains of the ancient city of Guenos, which are located in the area of \u200b\u200bold Ochamchira.

Ochamchira today

Not long ago, hot springs of mineral water were discovered in the vicinity of the city, which can be used for medicinal purposes. In the future, Ochamchira may become a balneological resort.

In the villages of Ochamchira district there are architectural monuments of the X-XVII centuries. This area has long been famous as one of the main places for tea production.

If you are in the Ochamchira region, be sure to visit the Abrskila cave, which is located in the village of Chlou. The length of the galleries of this cave reaches two kilometers. In terms of beauty and the presence of karst formations, this cave is not inferior to New Athos.

Our second day in Abkhazia has arrived. Yesterday we were in Gagra, today we will go east - to Ochamchira, and on the way we will see a number of other interesting objects

It is worth saying a few words about our way of moving around the country. Back in Russia, we agreed with a local resident, whom we found on the forums, that we would rent him and his car for a week to move around the country. Renting meant transporting us at any time of the day or night to any point in Abkhazia for a fixed amount per day. A few days before departure, the composition of our expedition was cut in half, and we were offered to use a passenger car instead of the Gazelle, with a different driver. We regarded this proposal as reasonable and agreed. Having exchanged contacts, we set off with slight nervousness to Sochi, where our guide was supposed to meet us. So, even before boarding the plane in Moscow, we felt Abkhazian hospitality - Georgy Alexandrovich (that was the name of the conductor) called us several times, asking if everything was okay, if the plane was delayed. Upon arrival, he was waiting for us in the first row of people greeting us at the airport, and immediately took us to the car, in which we set off.

Well, now let's return to the main topic of the post :)

2 It was our first morning in Abkhazia. The morning begins with breakfast. Breakfast in the fresh air, moreover, in a bamboo grove. A roadside cafe, the owner of which came early for us (at the big request of our guide) and prepared barbecue. As Georgy [Alexandrovich] said, “if the fire is burning, it means they are waiting for us.”

3 cafes where we had breakfast are also interesting with such panels. In general, in Abkhazia there are very often similar works of architectural art that have purely utilitarian functions. For example, this is the toilet wall :)

4 Abkhazian cows consider themselves the main participants in road traffic. They go as they want and wherever they want

5 The condition of the road from Sukhum to the east (towards Georgia) is worse than to the west (towards Russia). There are frequent potholes, but, in general, you can drive without problems

6 There are a lot of mimosa along the roads - the same one that is sold on every corner in Russia on March 8th. This year, spring came 1.5 months later, and Russian women were left without yellow brooms

7 Such booths in the courtyards of private houses catch the eye. Their purpose is as follows: after the war (92-93), food supply was tight, and people set up such “supermarkets” (according to George), in which they sold to the villagers what they grew themselves. Georgy says that those who had such a shop made good money

8 Well, we are approaching the goal - the city of Ochamchira (Abkh. Ochamchira). In Soviet times, more than 18 thousand people lived here, but after the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict, the city’s population decreased significantly - mainly due to refugees who did not return. Now the city's population is less than 5 thousand people

9 We immediately go to the embankment to the music school

10 Echoes of war - a potbelly stove pipe sticks out of every window

11 The city is a mixture of dilapidated buildings and unfinished buildings. It's a sad sight

13 Let's take a short walk along the embankment. Original sculptural solutions

14 and nearby there is a huge sinkhole...

16 they started building a pier near the shore - but it was never completed

17 On January 26, 2009, the Main Headquarters of the Russian Navy announced the creation in 2009 of a base for warships of the Black Sea Fleet in the port of Ochamchira. They are not visible from the city center, but they are there

18 The sad impression is complemented by cows (which, as we remember, are the masters of the situation on the roads of Abkhazia), which feed right next to the local administration building

19 The first president of the republic, Vdalislav Ardzinba, is watching over all this from posters. There are a lot of posters with his image in the country.

20 Well, we will go to the main object for us in the city - the railway station. It appeared to us as one of the examples of complete devastation on the railway. It’s hard to say anything here, you just have to watch...

21 cash register windows

26 the roof is long gone

27 Thanks to the many Georgian language experts who came to my blog: now I know what is written here: “Geno [from] Khashuri”

29 what a casting!

33 Although the station is in terrible condition, it is used for transshipment of Tkuarchal coal to ships. We will go to Tkuarchal the next day

35 In the luggage compartment there was an interesting device - an electromechanical computer that calculates the cost of tickets

37 At one time, steam locomotives ran here. Some of them were cut up, some were taken away by the Georgians during the conflict. All that remains are the pumps for refueling steam locomotives with water.

39 And here are the first carriages. This one is still well preserved. All that remains is to hollow out the hardened cement inside - and you can use it

40 Houses of local residents

42 Fence car

43 Let's go to the depot

46 There are a lot of sawn cars lying around

47 What’s interesting is that cast iron sleepers were used here

49 And here’s the worst thing - a whole cemetery of carriages

50 Apparently, at one time they were dumped right on the tracks in order to block the road for trains

51 Wave car

56 Behind the station is a feed mill. Condition is the same

57 Well, the view of all this chaos from above

59 We are trying to get to the depot. We come across a gas mask warehouse...

60 and candle lanterns

61 A pair of diesel shunting locomotives are hidden in the depot itself. Locked doors and the same ubiquitous thorn prevented us from getting inside.

63 Russian Railways is slowly restoring the local railway, but so far this only concerns the track and light signaling

64 Time has stopped here

66 Subtropical flower beds:)

69 The general impression of the city and the station can be expressed with this photograph

In this photo we are leaving the city and heading back to Sukhum, visiting various remarkable places along the way.

70 This is one of the oldest temples in Abkhazia - the Ilorsky Church of St. George the Victorious. It was built back in the 11th century. They write that many pilgrims go to it. We met two from Moscow

71 Temple Garden

72 Coffee is considered a cult drink here, and is drunk exclusively from such small cups (a la our espresso). Used many times a day. Costs from 15r to 30r. At the bottom of the cup there must be a so-called "clay" (as my friend said) - coffee grounds

73 A little automotive theme again. An artifact of the Soviet past - a traffic police post

74 Mobile gas station. Don’t think that there are only such gas stations in Abkhazia - this one was unique, we have never seen similar cars before

75 Georgy (our guide) suggested that we go to the thermal springs in the village of Kyndyg

Ochamchira (Abkhazia) 2019

The Black Sea coast in the territory of picturesque Abkhazia is very clean and framed by pebble and sandy beaches. Along its entire length there are small resort towns, where every visitor will find a calm and quiet holiday, warm sea and gentle sun.

Tourist sites that are successfully restoring their infrastructure include the small town of Ochamchira. Abkhazia today is a country with an amazing historical past and numerous architectural sites. Evidence of long-term presence of people in this territory is found in many places in the region. Archaeological excavations are also being carried out in the vicinity of a small resort, which is part of the Ochamchira municipality.

The city is surrounded by a picturesque natural landscape. In the valley, tobacco and tea are grown on plantations, which are the main agricultural crops of the region. Near the resort there are unique hot springs (water temperature almost 100 degrees), beautiful lakes and a eucalyptus grove.

Story

The first settlement (polis) of Guenos, which in the old days was located on the site of the modern resort, was founded by Greek colonists more than 2.5 thousand years ago (in the 6th century BC) and it existed until the beginning of the 4th century BC. The ancient settlement became known thanks to the sources of Pseudo-Skylaka. The main archaeological excavations confirming the presence of people here are the settlement itself and the Meotian sanctuary, where the remains of horse skulls with bridles were discovered. The archaeological complex includes several hills; three of the eight existing ones were discovered in 1984.

But in addition to the archaeological excavations of ancient times, in the vicinity of the resort town there are also numerous other ancient monuments dating back to the X-XVII centuries. Initially, the city was called Oshimshir (translated from Turkish, shamshir means boxwood), since in its vicinity there were dense impenetrable boxwood groves. The new name for the resort was given later. Modern Ochamchira city 2017 attracts attention not only as a resort on the Black Sea coast, but also as a unique storehouse, where there are numerous ancient monuments and structures reminiscent of past times.

Geography

The resort is located in a convenient location on the plain: on the very coast of the Black Sea at the mouth of the mountain river Galidzge. The city of Ochamchira is located in the southeast of the country at an altitude of 5 meters above sea level. Its distance from Sukhum is 50 km, from Tbilisi - 351 km, from the Russian border (Krasnodar Territory) - 185 km.

Population

The local residents are people of different nationalities - these are Abkhazians (more than 70%), Georgians and Mingrelians, Russians and Armenians. If in 1979 the population was 18,700 people, and in 1989 - more than 20,000 people, then according to the 2011 census, the number of residents decreased significantly to 5,280 people (according to some sources 12,000 people).

Modern mountains Ochamchira in Abkhazia is built up mainly with one-story and two-story houses, so you can rent a room in the private sector. The only building where vacationers are offered cozy rooms is a mini-hotel, which is located on the coast itself.

The Ochamchira resort attracts with its silence and measured rhythm of life. There are no large crowds of vacationers on the local beach, so you can take any place you like on the shore and enjoy the sea breeze, the gentle sun and all the delights that a holiday in Abkhazia gives.

What is attractive about holidays in Ochamchira? The rapidly developing tourism infrastructure of Abkhazia is increasing the rating of small resort towns located on the very Black Sea coast. Changes are taking place for the better, but thanks to the small number of vacationers, all conditions are created for a quiet and relaxing stay at sea, away from noisy resorts. The main objects that attract tourists here are numerous archaeological sites and ancient monuments.

Which direction to choose?

In the resort town of Ochamchira, a varied holiday is provided - beaches, tourist excursions and hikes along exciting routes, as well as exploring local attractions and treatment. The climate is favorable both in the summer (in July the average air temperature is +23°C) and in the winter season - the average temperature is +4.5°C.

Of course, a small town on the Black Sea coast is not as popular as Sukhum, Gagra, Pitsunda or New Athos, but for people who love orderliness in everything and peace, this is the most ideal place for an all-season stay at the sea (the length of the local beach is 3. 5 km). In the surrounding area there are hot mineral springs that are suitable for treating various diseases.

A distinctive feature of the seaside city is its inexpensive holidays. In Ochamchira, prices are very low compared to other resorts in Abkhazia, so you can relax, saving your family budget and fully enjoy the delights of this amazing region. And renting a room or room will not be difficult - there are always many offers in the private sector, but good living conditions are created in a small but cozy hotel, guest houses and boarding house.

When choosing a holiday in Ochamchira, reviews from people who have already visited these areas will serve as an excellent guide and help you plan your travel time and stay at sea correctly. There are a lot of places to visit - these are:

· caves and waterfalls;

· cathedrals and temples (X-XVII centuries);

· ruins of an ancient settlement (VI-IV centuries BC);

· hot mineral springs;

· picturesque lakes.

Those who are interested in history and archeology go on vacation to Ochamchira. There are unique ancient monuments and ancient excavations here. In the past (at the beginning of the 20th century) the resort was a major trading port, but today it has practically lost its significance in this direction and only the influx of tourists and vacationers can restore the relevance of a small seaside town. Here you can fully enjoy the beautiful scenery of wild nature, clean pebble beach and warm sea water.

Before you go on vacation in Ochamchira, it is advisable to study the location of the resort on the map, find out where all the attractions are and what is the best transport to get to the city. Staying in a new place is always accompanied by numerous impressions. Beach lovers will be able to find a cozy corner for themselves. The sun shines here almost the entire season. You can go here alone, with a group or with your family.

Attractions and entertainment

The small resort town of Ochamchira in Abkhazia is famous for its numerous historical and architectural sites. The most famous are:

· Abrskil cave;

· Ilorsky temple;

· ruins of the ancient city of Guenos;

· eucalyptus grove;

· Lake Amtkel;

· Cascade of Wolf Gate waterfalls;

· Shakuran waterfall;

· Azantian dolmen;

· Kyndyga thermal spring;

· Mokva Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In all its beauty and splendor it will appear before tourists Mokva Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was built in the 10th century. It is located in an amazing place where the two rivers Mokva and Dvaba meet. Since ancient times, the cathedral has served as a place of pilgrimage, but today it is one of the unique architectural monuments and is considered an object of historical heritage. There is a functioning church on the territory of the cathedral, and entry is always open for every parishioner.

A fascinating trip will be to the picturesque Lake Amtkel, which is located nearby in the mountains. Towering forested mountains are reflected in the turquoise water. You can swim on the lake on a catamaran. A night spent on the shore of a wonderful reservoir will be remembered for a lifetime.

The mysterious Abrskil cave, which is located in the vicinity of the city of Ochamchire - in the village of Chlou. People come here to get a lot of impressions and emotional pleasure from the beauty of stalactite and stalagmite formations, and leave unique photographs as souvenirs. You can get to the “Abkhazian miracle of nature” by car in half an hour. The unique natural object is named after the mythological hero of Abkhazia - the hero Abrskil, glorified in the heroic epic. The length of the galleries is almost 2 km, and in terms of stalactite formations and beauty, the cave resembles New Athos.

Ilor Temple located in the village of Ilori. The white stone shrine was erected in the first half of the 11th century in honor of St. George, the patron saint of these places. The temple has one spacious hall, in the center of which there is a semicircular altar. The complex includes other church buildings. This is a unique “pearl” of Abkhazia and an object of the country’s historical heritage.

There is little entertainment in the resort town of Ochamchira itself, but for new experiences you can go to Sukhum, the capital of Abkhazia, which is located 50 km away. The main sites to visit are the Sukhumi Monkey Nursery, the Ruins of Bagrat Castle, the Botanical Garden, and the Abkhaz State Museum. One day is enough for the trip. Such a vacation at sea will be remembered for a long time.

How to get there?

The resort town of Ochamchire can be reached by different means of transport: bus, car, taxi and train. You can reduce travel time by plane, but the nearest airport is in Adler and from there it is best to travel by train. The route passes through several resorts of Abkhazia located on the coast - these are Gagra, Gudauta, New Athos and Sukhum. The city has its own railway station (an old building with columns). From here one small branch goes to the city of Tkuarchal, and the end stop is in Tagiloni.

The resort is connected to other cities of the region by the Tbilisi-Senaki-Leselidze highway (Abzhuiskoe highway), which is crossed by the road running from Ochamchire to Tkuarchal. Buses and minibuses run from the capital Sukhum to the resort (the distance along the highway is 58 km), but the route of suburban buses does not pass through Ochamchire and stops are made in the nearest settlements. The distance from Sukhumi is covered by car in 50 minutes.

You can also get to the Black Sea resort by your own car:

· You need to get to the border on the Psou River, where the checkpoint is located.

· When crossing the border, the car is checked and documents are checked (passport control), after which entry into the territory of Abkhazia is allowed.

But the most popular and inexpensive mode of transport is the Adler-Sukhum train. The departure time from Adler is in the morning, and in the opposite direction the train departs in the daytime. A large number of stops and customs inspections increase the travel time (approximately 5 hours are spent on the road). At the border, passengers do not need to go to the platform - inspection is carried out directly in the cars.

When purchasing tickets for a bus, train or plane, you must take into account the time of departure and arrival of the train at your final destination, because schedules for other types of transport do not fit together. There is a direct train from Moscow to Sukhum and all that remains is to change to an intercity bus or minibus.

Thanks to its convenient location to the main highways of Abkhazia, getting to the Black Sea resort is not particularly difficult. Travel time is shortened by the beautiful landscapes outside the window, which every tourist who comes to the beautiful country of Abkhazia for the first time gazes at.

To Ochamchira

Slowly I continue to process and publish my photos of Abkhazia, the next story will be about a town called Ochamchira.

Unlike mountainous Abkhazia, Ochamchira is located not in the mountains but on a plain. The mountains in the background are almost invisible. Around the field where tea was grown - the same Georgian tea, familiar from Soviet childhood, was grown right here, in this very field.

And now a little history. Ochamchira is one of the oldest settlements in Abkhazia. Back in the 4th century. BC. The Greek settlement of Guenos arose in the area of the city of Ochamchira.

In the XIII-XIV centuries. Genoese merchants created the Ala-Gunda trading post here. But during the period of Turkish rule, it fell into decay; its surroundings were overgrown with boxwood forests.
It is believed that the modern name of the city - Ochamchira - comes from the Turkish word shamshir, i.e. boxwood
In the second half of the 19th century, Ochamchira became an urban-type settlement, and at the beginning of the 20th century, Ochamchira became a commercial port and city.
The war of 1992-93 did not pass without a trace for the city. It was in the Ochamchira region that the Ochamchira (Eastern) Front took place, and in the vicinity of the city of Ochamchira until recently there were still minefields...
There are practically no tourists there, since the majority (2/3), the rest go to Gagra, the rest in New Athos and Sukhum, and only a few in Ochamchira. If you want a clean beach, a quiet place and you love open spaces, Ochamchira is for you.

But that’s actually what all the fuss is about. All my life I dreamed of visiting Chernobyl, but it didn’t work out, but in Abkhazia there is an exact copy of the very place where the Ferris wheel from Stalker is located.
