At the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th centuries. The Bahamas turned into a free pirate republic, with the city of Nassau becoming the main base of pirates and privateers. Here, among others, the legendary pirate Blackbeard settled. The end of the pirate republic was put by the British governor Woods Rogers in 1719.
When the War of Independence began in the United States, a stream of refugees poured into the Bahamas wishing to remain subjects of the British Crown. Within a few years, the population of the islands tripled. After slavery was abolished in 1807, freed slaves came to the Bahamas.
During the American Civil War, the Bahamas became a raw material base for the southerners, and during Prohibition, alcohol was smuggled through the islands.
Tourism in the Bahamas began to develop thanks to the Second World War; it was during the war that American tourists flocked to the islands. The tourist popularity of the Bahamas was also promoted by the revolution in Cuba, which closed the resorts there to citizens of the United States and European countries.
The Bahamas gained independence on July 10, 1973.
